Detection of tetracycline resistance genes, aminoglycoside modifying enzymes, and coagulase gene typing of clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus in the Southwest of Iran The aim of the present study was to determine the aminoglycoside modifying enzymes (AMEs) encoded genes, tetracycline resistance genes, and the coa based typing of Staphylococcus aureus isolates in the Southwest of Iran.Antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates was carried out by agar disk diffusion methods. Propionibacterium acnes is developing gradual increase in resistance to oral tetracyclines. Propionibacterium acnes is an anaerobic bacterium that causes deep infection in organs and prosthetic joints, in addition to acne vulgaris. Many tetracycline-resistant P. acnes strains have been isolated because oral tetracyclines are frequently used as an acne treatment against P. acnes. In this study, we found a novel tetracycline resistance mechanism in P. acnes. Three doxycycline-resistant (MIC: 16 (...) protein but no mutation in the 16S rRNA. When the mutant with decreased susceptibility to doxycycline was obtained in vitro, only the mutated S10 protein was found (MIC: 4 µg ml-1), not the mutated 16S rRNA gene. This result shows that the S10 protein amino acid substitution contributes to reduced doxycycline susceptibility in P. acnes and suggests that tetracycline resistance is acquired through a 16S rRNA mutation after the S10 protein amino acid substitution causes reduced susceptibility.

Palmoplantar pustulosis and pustulotic arthro-osteitis treatment with potassium iodide and tetracycline, a novel remedy with an old drug: a review of 25 patients. The use of potassium iodide (KI) to treat palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) and pustulotic arthro-osteitis (PAO) has not previously been reported. Here, we report the first successful treatment of PPP and PAO with KI.Among 25 patients with PPP, seven had an associated PAO. All patients were administered 900 mg KI three times per day for 3 (...)  months. Overall, 12 patients received this medical treatment for the first time or had >6 months interval since the last therapy for PPP. The other 13 patients who were nonresponsive to tetracycline for >3 months prior to KI treatment were treated with a combination of KI and tetracycline.
