21. Pilot Evaluation of the Impact of a Mission-Based Surgical Training Rotation on the Plastic Surgery Skills and Competencies Development of General Surgery Residents in Rwanda. (Abstract)

Pilot Evaluation of the Impact of a Mission-Based Surgical Training Rotation on the Plastic Surgery Skills and Competencies Development of General Surgery Residents in Rwanda. Increasing subspecialty surgical capacity in Rwanda requires innovative approaches to augment the skills of pre-existing surgical providers. Short-term, high-intensity training programs can be effective for surgical education, however, few studies have investigated the quality of skills acquired through a condensed (...) surgical experience. This study aims to determine the efficacy of a 3-week surgical training rotation (STR) to teach plastic surgery skills to general surgery residents in Rwanda.A survey-based, prospective observational study of general surgery residents and volunteer plastic surgery educators participating in an Operation Smile STR. Resident self-assessment scores of surgical capabilities at the beginning and end of the rotation were compared to surgeon evaluation of resident performance. Progression

22. The Impact of Verapamil Gel on Efficiency of Tissue Expander Device in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Full Text available with Trip Pro

The Impact of Verapamil Gel on Efficiency of Tissue Expander Device in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery One of the weaknesses of recovering the skin defects by tissue expander device is that it needs relatively long time and it has complications. Since verapamil gel reduces the production of these capsules around silicone prosthesis and reduces the formation of collagen in the capsule areas. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of verapamil gel on efficiency of tissue expander

Addressing Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in the Era of Clitoral Reconstruction: Plastic Surgery The aim of this review is to give an overview of the recent evidence on clitoral reconstruction and other relevant reconstructive plastic surgery measures after female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C).Recent publications present refinements and modifications of the surgical technique of clitoral reconstruction along with reconstruction of the labia majora and clitoral hood. Novel (...) approaches with reposition of the clitoral nerve, anchoring of the labia majora, fat grafting, and full thickness mucosa grafts have been introduced. The current evidence on outcomes of clitoral reconstruction shows potential benefits. However, there is a risk of postoperative complications and a negative outcome. Experts in the field advocate for a multidisciplinary approach including psychosexual counseling and health education with or without subsequent clitoral reconstructive surgery. The evolution

24. Do Patterns of Reconstruction Choices After Mohs Surgery Vary by Specialty? A Pilot Study of Mohs Surgeons and Facial Plastic Surgeons. (Abstract)

Do Patterns of Reconstruction Choices After Mohs Surgery Vary by Specialty? A Pilot Study of Mohs Surgeons and Facial Plastic Surgeons. Differences in approach to repair a specified defect after Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) between specialties have not been previously examined. To assess the difference in frequency of which reconstruction repairs are selected after MMS, among Mohs surgeons and facial plastic surgeons (FPS), and evaluate whether the level of satisfaction with the final repair (...) outcome differed between specialties. The study was approved by the Saint Louis University Institutional Review Board. A link to the survey was distributed to members of American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) and American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), between January and May 2016.The reconstructive procedure selected most often ("top choice") was not significantly different between Mohs surgeons and FPS for the majority of the images. There was no material difference

A Critique of the Impact Factor and Ramifications of its Misuse in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: The Real Impact of the Impact Factor. The impact factor is used to compare the number of citations of a journal with its number of publications. Although first used to assess the significance of various journals, its very creator has stated that it is an imperfect system. Presently, the impact factor overvalues the importance of large-readership journals and undervalues that of smaller more

27. Alternative Metrics of Scholarly Output: The Relationship among Altmetric Score, Mendeley Reader Score, Citations, and Downloads in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. (Abstract)

Alternative Metrics of Scholarly Output: The Relationship among Altmetric Score, Mendeley Reader Score, Citations, and Downloads in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The impact of scholarly output is typically measured by the number of citations and, more recently, downloads. Newer metrics have been developed to reflect digital dissemination of knowledge such as the Altmetric and Mendeley reader scores. This article examines the relationship among citations, download rates, Altmetric scores (...) , and Mendeley reader scores in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The authors accessed the 55 most-cited articles published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 2014 to 2015. Altmetric scores, download rates, field-weighted citations, and Mendeley reader number were extracted. Correlation matrices were used to identify methodologies positively correlating between scores. The top-ranked articles were then collectively evaluated for central subject themes and unifying scoring methodologies. The highest

Single-port versus multiport laparoscopic surgery comparing long-term patient satisfaction and cosmetic outcome. Several studies and meta-analysis showed Single-port or Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SPL) to be superior over Multiport laparoscopic surgery (MPL) mainly in terms of postoperative pain and cosmetic result. But very little is known whether these results are only a short-term effect or are persistent on the long run after SPL. We therefore evaluated and compared long-term (...) outcomes regarding cosmesis and chronic pain after SPL and MPL.We conducted a comparative study with propensity score matching of all patients undergoing SPL or MPL between October 2008 and December 2013 in terms of postoperative cosmetic results and chronic pain. Follow-up data were obtained from mailed patient questionnaires and telephone interviews. Postoperative cosmesis was assessed using the patients overall scar opinion on a 10-point scale and the Patients scale of the standardized Patient

Determinative factors in surgical planning of eyebrow cosmetic and reconstructive surgery The purpose of this study was to identify the different factors that an oculoplastic surgeon should consider while practicing cosmetic or reconstructive eyebrow surgery in order to have the final patient's satisfaction. In an observational case series study, five photographs were taken from each of 60 females to show ideal eyebrow positioning with fingers. Eyebrow landmarks, including tarsal plate show (TPS (...) and lateral limbus was assigned to 33.3% and 66.6% of cases, respectively. The desired eyebrow apex angle in two age groups of our subjects (>40 years and ≤40 years) was not statistically different.Landmarks of the eyebrow and its desired position are somehow different between different studies, which may be explained by the variation in race, gender, culture, and age. As there is not any uniform rule in planning of cosmetic surgeries of eyebrow, oculoplastic surgeons should consider the difference

Impact of an Event Reporting System on Resident Complication Reporting in Plastic Surgery Training: Addressing an ACGME and Plastic Surgery Milestone Project Core Competency. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and Plastic Surgery Milestone Project has identified practice-based learning and improvement, which involves systematically analyzing current practices and implementing changes, as a core competency in residency education. In surgical care, complication reporting (...) is an essential component of practice-based learning and improvement as complications are analyzed in morbidity and mortality conference for quality improvement. Unfortunately, current methods for capturing a comprehensive profile of complications may significantly underestimate the true occurrence of complications. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to evaluate an intervention for complication reporting and compare this to current practice, in a plastic surgery training program. This
