241. Eat to avoid negative self-awareness: Locus of control and core self-evaluation as serial mediators in the effect of stress on food intake. (Abstract)

Eat to avoid negative self-awareness: Locus of control and core self-evaluation as serial mediators in the effect of stress on food intake. The primary hypothesis of escape theory lies in that those who are under stress eat to escape from negative self-awareness. Although escape theory has been well cited in the eating literature, relatively few studies have directly tested its applicability to stress-induced eating. The aim of the present study is to provide causal evidence on using escape

242. Modulation of brain activity with transcranial direct current stimulation: Targeting regions implicated in impaired illness awareness in schizophrenia. (Abstract)

Modulation of brain activity with transcranial direct current stimulation: Targeting regions implicated in impaired illness awareness in schizophrenia. Impaired illness awareness or insight into illness (IIA) is a common feature of schizophrenia that contributes to medication nonadherence and poor clinical outcomes. Neuroimaging studies suggest IIA may arise from interhemispheric imbalance in frontoparietal regions, particularly in the posterior parietal area (PPA) and the dorsolateral (...) prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). In this pilot study, we examined the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on brain regions implicated in IIA.Eleven patients with schizophrenia with IIA (≥3 PANSS G12) and 10 healthy controls were included. A crossover design was employed where all participants received single-session bi-frontal, bi-parietal, and sham stimulation in random order. For each condition, we measured (i) blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response to an illness awareness task

243. Mindfulness-based emotional eating awareness training: taking the emotional out of eating. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Mindfulness-based emotional eating awareness training: taking the emotional out of eating. Emotional eating is important to study and address because it predicts poor outcome in weight loss interventions. Interventions have only touched the surface in terms of addressing emotional eating. Mindfulness approaches can address emotional eating by modification of emotion regulation and appetitive traits. The current study involved development of an emotional eating-specific mindfulness intervention

248. Hypertension Awareness, Treatment and Control in US Adults: Trends in the Hypertension Control Cascade by Population Subgroup (NHANES 1999-2016). (Abstract)

Hypertension Awareness, Treatment and Control in US Adults: Trends in the Hypertension Control Cascade by Population Subgroup (NHANES 1999-2016). Examining changes in the hypertension awareness, treatment and control (i.e., the hypertension control cascade) by population subgroup can inform targeted efforts to improve hypertension control and reduce disparities. We analyzed data from the 1999-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and examined trends across 6-year periods (...) in hypertension awareness, treatment, and control by age, sex and race/ethnicity. We included 39,589 participants (16,141 with hypertension). Hypertension awareness, treatment, and control increased from 1999 to 2016 among all age groups. However, there were few changes after 2010. Across all time periods, awareness, treatment, and control were higher among younger women (versus younger men), while control was higher among older men (versus older women). Hypertension control was persistently lower for blacks

250. A conceptual framework for an oral cancer awareness campaign in Northern Germany - Challenges in campaign development and assessment. (Abstract)

A conceptual framework for an oral cancer awareness campaign in Northern Germany - Challenges in campaign development and assessment. Initial impetus for action: Oral cancer is still an underestimated disease in terms of incidence as well as mortality rates; it requires urgent prevention and early detection. At present, there is no best-practice systematic approach to raising awareness and informing the public about about this type of cancer in Germany. This article describes a framework (...) that covers the significant stages of conceptual development and campaign design to promote oral cancer awareness in Germany. Solution: The challenges of the development, as well as evaluation of an oral cancer awareness campaign are shared in this article. Four key stages of the campaign are defined: (1) mass media, (2) target groups, (3) health care professionals, and (4) epidemiology. For each section, the following levels of assessment are proposed: (a) campaign development (formative assessment), (b

252. Impaired cognitive self-awareness mediates the association between alexithymia and excitation/inhibition balance in the pgACC. (Abstract)

Impaired cognitive self-awareness mediates the association between alexithymia and excitation/inhibition balance in the pgACC. Previous research showed that automatic emotion regulation is associated with activation of subcortical areas and subsequent feedforward processes to cortical areas. In contrast, cognitive awareness of emotions is mediated by negative feedback from cortical to subcortical areas. Pregenual anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC) is essential in the modulation of both affect (...) and alexithymia. We considered the interplay between these two mechanisms in the pgACC and their relationship with alexithymia. In 68 healthy participants (30 women, age = 26.15 ± 4.22) we tested associations of emotion processing and alexithymia with excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance represented as glutamate (Glu)/GABA in the pgACC measured via magnetic resonance spectroscopy in 7 T.Alexithymia was positively correlated with the Glu/GABA ratio (N = 41, p = 0.0393). Further, cognitive self-awareness showed

254. The effect of phonological awareness on rapid automatized naming. (Abstract)

The effect of phonological awareness on rapid automatized naming. Background: Phonological awareness (PA) is a fundamental predictor of reading disability. However, researches on reading have indicated that PA assessment alone is not sufficient to prevent reading problems. Rapid automatized naming (RAN) has been suggested as another influential factor in reading deficits independent of PA. This study investigated the impact of phonological awareness on rapid automatized naming. Methods (...) -Whitney, and Wilcoxon tests were used for data analysis. Results: The results revealed that the RAN time was significantly reduced (p≤0.001), with a significant increase in PA scores (p≤0.001). In addition, there was a significant inverse relationship between some of the measures of the phonological awareness subtests and rapid automatized naming (eg, phonemic blending & RAN (numbers): ρ=-0.52 with p≤0.001). Conclusion: The findings showed that in the initial assessment, PA and RAN had a significant

255. Flow Awareness as a New Safety Device for Cardiopulmonary Bypass. (Abstract)

Flow Awareness as a New Safety Device for Cardiopulmonary Bypass. Safety devices such as bubble detectors and level detectors have been in use for more than 40 years and initially reduced the risks associated with gaseous emboli during cardiopulmonary bypass; however, the risks have not been eliminated. This research explored a new safety device designed to further reduce these risks: Flow Awareness Technology. This device visually alerts the perfusionist when the ratio of venous return does (...) not equal the amount of arterial flow. To determine the efficacy of this device, 33 participants with no perfusion background were randomly assigned to Group A (flow awareness only), Group B (level detector only), or Group C (control). These participants were instructed to turn off the arterial pump when they noticed that the fluid in the venous reservoir had begun to drop or if their assigned safety device was triggered. The venous line was fully occluded at times unknown to the participants
