81. Enhancement of Photodynamic Therapy for Bowen's Disease Using Plum-Blossom Needling to Augment Drug Delivery. (Abstract)

Enhancement of Photodynamic Therapy for Bowen's Disease Using Plum-Blossom Needling to Augment Drug Delivery. Bowen's disease (BD) is treated effectively with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT). Plum-blossom needling (PBN) may enhance topical drug delivery. To compare the effects of and adverse reactions to PBN and ALA-PDT of BD with those associated with ALA-PDT alone.Forty-three lesions from 24 patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups. The PBN-ALA-PDT group underwent (...) required for the lesions to achieve CRs. The PBN-ALA-PDT group required fewer treatment sessions and had higher protoporphyrin IX fluorescence levels (p < .05).Plum-blossom needling may improve the efficacy of ALA-PDT by enhancing ALA delivery for BD treatment.

86. The effect of exercise therapy, dry needling, and nonfunctional electrical stimulation on radicular pain: a case report Full Text available with Trip Pro

The effect of exercise therapy, dry needling, and nonfunctional electrical stimulation on radicular pain: a case report A 43-year-old male, office worker with history of chronic radicular low back pain radiating into the left leg was admitted to a sports medicine research center, neuroscience institute. During the past year, he visited a physiotherapist and orthopedic experts. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a protruded disc at L4-5 level. Additionally, electromyography indicated (...) that there was bilateral moderate irritation at the L5-S1 root. We designed a management package including exercise therapy, dry needling, and nonfunctional electrical stimulation for four sessions. Outcomes included pain intensity, pain with lumbar flexion, with the numerical rating scale (NRS), visual analogue scale (VAS), and function measured with the Oswestry Disability Index before and after the intervention. After 4 treatment sessions, the patient reported a reduction in pain intensity from a 9 to 2 on the NRS

Beliefs and values in Japanese acupuncture: an ethnography of Japanese trained acupuncture practitioners in Japan Japanese acupuncture is gaining international recognition. However, previous research has failed to comprehensively describe the characteristics of Japanese acupuncture by not investigating it within the Japanese clinical environment. This study aimed to identify unique and routine elements of Japanese acupuncture, describe these elements in detail, and examine how the current (...) beliefs and attitudes of Japanese acupuncture practitioners related to philosophical concepts in their practice.Between August 2012 and December 2016, ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in Japan. Japanese trained acupuncture practitioners were recruited by chain referral and emergent sampling. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, and by analyzing documents. Thematic analysis was used to critically evaluate the data.Thirty-eight participants were recruited

The effects of acupuncture versus sham acupuncture in the treatment of fibromyalgia: a randomized controlled clinical trial. The aim of this manuscript is to determine and to compare the efficacy of real acupuncture with sham acupuncture on fibromyalgia (FM) treatment.50 women with FM were randomized into 2 groups to receive either true acupuncture or sham acupuncture. Subjects were evaluated with VAS (at night, at rest, during activity), SF-36, Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Beck (...) The aim of this study was to compare the short-term and intermediate-term efficacy of acupuncture plus fire needle therapy with that of acupuncture alone in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (LE).Thirty-eight patients with LE who had persisted for at least 2 months were enrolled in this prospective, assessor-blinded, randomized controlled pilot trial (...) the short-term and intermediate-term effects of treatment. The data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and t test.Within-group analyses showed better results for acupuncture plus fire needle therapy in the short term and intermediate term. Differences in the severity of pain and secondary outcomes were significant in the intermediate term in the acupuncture group. At the end of treatment, none of the differences in outcome scores were significant, except for maximum grip strength in the affected

MicroRNA in Acupuncture Studies: Does Small RNA Shed Light on the Biological Mechanism of Acupuncture? MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are the main regulators of diverse physiological processes. Recently, miRNAs have emerged as significant players related to the effect of acupuncture although the biological mechanisms connecting the function of these miRNAs with the effect of acupuncture are not well understood. In animal models of various diseases, such as neurological disease, cardiovascular disease (...) , myopathy, and pain, a number of miRNAs were altered after administration of electroacupuncture or manual acupuncture. Nonetheless, there are a limited number of studies published so far. This paper reviewed and discussed whether miRNAs could elucidate potential biological mechanism of acupuncture in the future studies.
