21341. Traditional Chinese acupuncture in tension-type headache: a controlled study. (Abstract)

Traditional Chinese acupuncture in tension-type headache: a controlled study. Thirty patients with tension-type headache were randomly chosen to undergo a trial of traditional Chinese acupuncture and sham acupuncture. Five measures were used to assess symptom severity and treatment response: intensity, duration and frequency of headache pain episodes, headache index and analgesic intake. The five measures were assessed during a 4 week baseline period, after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, and 1, 6 (...) and 12 months thereafter. Before the start of the study, each patient was administered the MMPI. Split-plot ANOVAs showed that, compared to baseline, at 1 month after the end of treatment and for the 12 month follow-up, the frequency of headache episodes, analgesic consumption and the headache index (but not the duration or intensity of headache episodes) significantly decreased over time; however, no difference between acupuncture and placebo treatment was found. No single MMPI scale predicted

21342. Effect of traditional Chinese acupuncture on severe tinnitus: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical investigation with open therapeutic control. (Abstract)

Effect of traditional Chinese acupuncture on severe tinnitus: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical investigation with open therapeutic control. This study aims to determine the effect of intensive acupuncture on severe tinnitus. The structure of the study was a randomized, double-blind, clinical investigation with open therapeutic surveillance and included 54 patients. All were subjected to 25 treatment sessions over a period of two months, each treatment lasting 30 minutes. Fifty-two (...) patients completed the study. The variables used for self-registration were based on the visual analogue scale (VAS), where annoyance, loudness and awareness of the tinnitus were assessed. These were recorded twice daily over a four-month period starting one month before the first treatment and ending one month after the last treatment. Questionnaires, interviews and audiometry were carried out repeatedly. No statistically significant differences were found between the acupuncture group and the placebo

21343. The influence of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on the release of neuropeptides in the saliva of healthy subjects. (Abstract)

by measuring the release of neuropeptides in saliva under the influence of sensory stimulation. VIP-like immunoreactivity (VIP-LI), NPY-LI, SP-LI, CGRP-LI and NKA-LI were analysed in the saliva of eight healthy subjects. Manual acupuncture and acupuncture with low-frequency electrical stimulation (2 Hz) were used. The saliva was collected during 20 minutes before the start of acupuncture stimulation, then during 20 minutes while the needles were in situ and then for another 20 minutes after the needles (...) The influence of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on the release of neuropeptides in the saliva of healthy subjects. In recent studies we have shown that xerostomia (dry mouth) can be treated successfully with sensory stimulation (acupuncture). The increase of saliva secretion lasted often for at least one year. Some neuropeptides have been found to influence the secretion of saliva. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms behind the effect of acupuncture on salivary secretion

21344. Effects of acupuncture treatment on daily life activities and quality of life: a controlled, prospective, and randomized study of acute stroke patients. (Abstract)

Effects of acupuncture treatment on daily life activities and quality of life: a controlled, prospective, and randomized study of acute stroke patients. A number of studies have indicated that acupuncture might improve the functional recovery of stroke patients. These studies vary in inclusion criteria, sample size, and evaluation methods. The present study was designed to investigate whether electroacupuncture treatment favorably affects stroke patients' ability to perform daily life (...) activities, their health-related quality of life, and their use of health care and social services. One hundred four consecutive patients >40 years of age admitted to hospital because of an acute stroke were randomized to 3 groups: deep, superficial, and no acupuncture treatment. The acupuncture treatment given by 4 physiotherapists started 4 to 10 days after randomization and was given twice a week for 10 weeks. All patients underwent conventional stroke rehabilitation as well. Two occupational

21345. Controlled trial of Japanese acupuncture for chronic myofascial neck pain: assessment of specific and nonspecific effects of treatment. (Abstract)

groups underwent comparable light shallow needling. The irrelevant acupuncture group received acupuncture at specific sites not relevant for cervical pain. The study measures included the McGill Pain Questionnaire-Short Form (SF-MPQ), the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R), medication diary, and physiologic measures. The factors examined as predictors of outcome pain ratings were experience with, beliefs about, and knowledge of acupuncture before treatment (...) -/posttreatment differences in pain than the irrelevant acupuncture and control groups (p < .05). The nonspecific effects of confidence in the acupuncturist, willingness to try any treatment, mood, and physiologic effect of needling were not predictive of treatment outcome, whereas confidence in the treatment and past experiences with acupuncture did correlate significantly with a decrease in pain.Relevant acupuncture with heat contributes to modest pain reduction in persons with myofascial neck pain

21347. Auricular acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for cocaine addiction. A pilot study. (Abstract)

Auricular acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for cocaine addiction. A pilot study. The authors conducted a single-blind study of auricular acupuncture in 36 cocaine-dependent inpatient veterans on a substance abuse treatment unit to determine whether the treatment could help reduce craving, increase treatment retention, and prevent relapse. Acupuncture was given on a predetermined schedule to both treatment and control groups, with status assessed regularly by independent, blinded raters (...) . The study failed to show a significant difference between treatment and control groups. However, the study patients, as a whole, did remain in treatment longer than a retrospectively analyzed group who received no acupuncture.

21348. [Acupuncture in stroke]. (Abstract)

[Acupuncture in stroke]. In 1995 we reported that acupuncture treatment of stroke patients in the subacute stage resulted in added therapeutic benefit. The purpose of the present study was to determine, one year after discharge from the rehabilitation centre, whether the treatment continued to have effect. Initially, 45 stroke patients were included in the study; median 40 days post stroke. The patients were randomized into two groups; one acupuncture group and one control group, taking (...) into considering the patients' sex and the actual site of the lesion. All subjects received an individually adapted, multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme. The acupuncture group received additional treatment with classical acupuncture for six weeks. The patients were thereafter given individual treatment at the rehabilitation centre and then under the primary health care service. 41 of the patients were available for further study one year after treatment ended; 21 patients from the acupuncture group

21352. [Acupuncture worth trying in severe tinnitus]. (Abstract)

[Acupuncture worth trying in severe tinnitus]. The article consists in a report of a study of 22 patients with disabling tinnitus, performed to elucidate the effects of a 3-month course of acupuncture (15 treatments) on the severity of tinnitus and on quality of life (QOL), as compared with those of individualised physiotherapy. The study was designed as a prospective, randomised, cross-over study with a follow-up period of one year after the final treatment. Treatment effects were evaluated (...) in terms of the patients' VAS (visual analogue scale) ratings and answers to questionnaires, including the NHP (Nottingham Health Profile), regarding the impact of tinnitus on different aspects of QOL. Baseline NHP scores showed tinnitus patients to manifest pronounced depressive characteristics. Acupuncture was found to yield immediate relief, both in terms of loudness and disturbance of the tinnitus, and significant improvement in QOL (NHP) for three months after the conclusion of treatment. 21357. Does psychological testing help to predict the response to acupuncture or massage/relaxation therapy in patients presenting to a general neurology clinic with headache? (Abstract)

Does psychological testing help to predict the response to acupuncture or massage/relaxation therapy in patients presenting to a general neurology clinic with headache? Patients with chronic headache were offered treatment by acupuncture or massage with relaxation instead of a change in their prescribed medication. They were randomly allocated to either treatment. There was a significant improvement in pain ratings with both treatment types. Specifically a greater effect was seen in migraine (...) patients treated by massage with relaxation when compared to acupuncture. No psychological factors were found to predict response to either treatment. At the end of the study, 13% of patients were significantly more worried that there may be a more serious cause underlying their headache despite reassurance and an improvement in their headache scores.

21360. Strategies to maintain the credibility of sham acupuncture used as a control treatment in clinical trials. (Abstract)

Strategies to maintain the credibility of sham acupuncture used as a control treatment in clinical trials. Many clinical trials concerning acupuncture are flawed by methodological problems. One of the major difficulties is the appropriate selection and use of a placebo control. This article evaluates the use of sham acupuncture as a placebo control and analyzes its credibility as a control treatment. Sixty-four subjects were assessed for their perception of whether they were receiving sham (...) or real acupuncture while participating in a clinical trial of acupuncture. It was found that if used under specific experimental conditions, sham acupuncture can function as a credible control. Specific strategies are suggested to maintain the credibility of sham acupuncture as a placebo control.
