161. Clinical and Basic Evaluation of the Prognostic Value of Uric Acid in Traumatic Brain Injury (Full text)

Clinical and Basic Evaluation of the Prognostic Value of Uric Acid in Traumatic Brain Injury Background: As a major antioxidant in serum, uric acid (UA) was once considered only as the leading cause of gout; however, recent studies have validated its neuroprotective role in ischemic stroke. Because the potential protective effects of UA in traumatic brain injury (TBI) remain largely unknown, this study investigated the role of UA in TBI in both clinical patients and experimental animals

163. Inhibitory Effects of Apium graveolens on Xanthine Oxidase Activity and Serum Uric Acid Levels in Hyperuricemic Mice (Full text)

Inhibitory Effects of Apium graveolens on Xanthine Oxidase Activity and Serum Uric Acid Levels in Hyperuricemic Mice Celery (Apium graveolens) is traditionally used to treat rheumatism and cardiovascular disorders. Hyperuricemia is considered as a predisposing factor for gout and is also suggested to be associated with coronary artery disease. In the present study, the effect of hydroalcoholic extracts from A. graveolens (AGE) against potassium oxonate (PO)-induced hyperuricemia (...) was investigated in mice. AGE (250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg) or allopurinol (5 mg/kg, as positive control) were orally administrated 1 h after PO injection (250 mg/kg, ip) for two weeks. After that, the serum uric acid level and hepatic xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) and xanthine oxidase (XO) activities were measured. In addition, the antioxidant activity of AGE was determined by assessment of hepatic lipid peroxidation, in vivo and the ferric reducing/antioxidant power assay, in vitro. The extract exhibited good

164. Serum Uric Acid in Roma and Non-Roma—Its Correlation with Metabolic Syndrome and Other Variables (Full text)

Serum Uric Acid in Roma and Non-Roma—Its Correlation with Metabolic Syndrome and Other Variables Background: The Roma population is one of the major marginalized groups in Europe, having higher incidence of all spectrums of disease and a shorter life expectancy. Yet, the reasons for higher morbidity and its exact prevalence were not properly studied. Objectives: The objective of our study was to compare the frequency of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Roma people to the non-Roma population (...) in Slovakia, and to compare levels of uric acid and its correlation with components of metabolic syndrome. Methods: A group of 452 Roma people aged 18⁻55 years, was compared to a control group of 403 non-Roma people. The data were obtained by questionnaire, anthropometric measures, and analyzed blood and urine samples Results: The prevalence of MetS was significantly higher among Roma participants (131; 29.6%) compared with non-Roma participants (80; 20.1%), p = 0.001. Roma people significantly more often

176. Uric Acid and Diabetic Nephropathy Risk. (PubMed)

Uric Acid and Diabetic Nephropathy Risk. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the western world. Current treatment methods, with better control of glycemia and blood pressure, including renin-angiotensin system blockade (RASB), appear to have slowed the DN progression rate but have not substantially decreased the annual incidence of new DN ESRD cases. Thus, new treatment targets are needed.Higher levels of serum uric acid (UA) are associated

177. Acute effect of soy and soy products on serum uric acid concentration among healthy Chinese men. (PubMed)

Acute effect of soy and soy products on serum uric acid concentration among healthy Chinese men. Soy products are essential to the daily life of the Chinese population. However, the association between soy products and serum uric acid remains unclear. Better understanding of their relationship could provide food choice information for patients with gout. This study assessed the acute effects of soy and soy products on serum uric acid.Sixty healthy adult male volunteers were recruited (...) and randomly assigned to six groups. Ten participants in each group randomly ingested one of six foods: water, soy, and four different soy products. A blood test was conducted after 3 h to examine uric acid concentration. The serum uric acid concentration significantly increased by 21.4±23.4 μmol/L at 1 h and 16.3±19.4 μmol/L at 2 h following ingestion of whole soybeans. These changes also applied to the soy powder group. The serum uric acid concentration rapidly increased by 38.1±20.5 μmol/L at 1 h, 34.4

178. Effects of dapagliflozin on serum uric acid levels in hospitalized type 2 diabetic patients with inadequate glycemic control: a randomized controlled trial. (Full text)

Effects of dapagliflozin on serum uric acid levels in hospitalized type 2 diabetic patients with inadequate glycemic control: a randomized controlled trial. Raised serum uric acid (SUA) level is commonly observed in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, a novel oral diabetic drug, might exert a potential hypouricemic effect. We evaluated the effects of dapagliflozin on SUA levels (...) with baseline SUA levels (P<0.0001) but not correlated with changes in 24-hour urine volume, 24-hour urine glucose, or 24-hour urinary uric acid.Dapagliflozin could improve glycemic control and lower SUA levels in hospitalized patients with uncontrolled T2DM. Longer-time trials are required to further demonstrate the hypouricemic effect of dapagliflozin and explore the potential underlying mechanisms.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Treatment Does not Reduce Uric Acid Levels in OSA Women. Although an association between uric acid (UA) levels and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been reported, the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on this measure is yet unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of CPAP therapy on serum UA levels in patients with OSA.We conducted a multicenter, open-label, randomized controlled trial in 307 women diagnosed with moderate-to-severe OSA

180. The relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and serum levels of uric acid and creatinine in children aged 2–14 years (Full text)

The relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and serum levels of uric acid and creatinine in children aged 2–14 years Hypothyroidism is a clinical syndrome that can lead to elevated levels of serum creatinine and uric acid by causing impaired renal function. Although many studies have been carried out on the relationship between overt hypothyroidism and renal function, few studies have been conducted on subclinical hypothyroidism and renal function, especially in pediatric patients (...) . For this reason, we studied this issue in children, so as to provide a background for more useful research and future education. This case-control study was performed on 107 children aged 2-14 years, 56 children with subclinical hypothyroidism in the case group, and 51 healthy children in the control group presenting to Ayatollah Mousavi Hospital in Zanjan and private clinics of Zanjan city. Thyroid stimulating hormone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, creatinine, and uric acid were measured in both groups
