170. Novel leptin OB3 peptide-induced signaling and progression in thyroid cancers: Comparison with leptin (PubMed)

Novel leptin OB3 peptide-induced signaling and progression in thyroid cancers: Comparison with leptin Obesity results in increased secretion of cytokines from adipose tissue and is a risk factor for various cancers. Leptin is largely produced by adipose tissue and cancer cells. It induces cell proliferation and may serve to induce various cancers. OB3-leptin peptide (OB3) is a new class of functional leptin peptide. However, its mitogenic effect has not been determined. In the present study (...) in the mouse showed that leptin, but not OB3, significantly increased circulating levels of thyrotropin (TSH), a growth factor for thyroid cancer. In summary, OB3 is a derivative of leptin that importantly lacks the mitogenic effects of leptin on thyroid cancer cells.

173. Epigenetically upregulated WIPF1 plays a major role in BRAF V600E-promoted papillary thyroid cancer aggressiveness (PubMed)

node metastasis (P=2.64E-05). In summary, BRAF V600E-activated MAP kinase pathway causes hypomethylation and overexpression of WIPF1; WIPF1 then functions like an oncoprotein to robustly promote aggressive cellular and tumor behaviors of PTC. This represents a novel mechanism in BRAF V600E-promoted PTC aggressiveness and identifies WIPF1 as a novel therapeutic target for thyroid cancer. (...) Epigenetically upregulated WIPF1 plays a major role in BRAF V600E-promoted papillary thyroid cancer aggressiveness How the BRAF V600E mutation promotes the pathogenesis and aggressiveness of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is not completely understood. Here we explored a novel mechanism involving WASP interacting protein family member 1 (WIPF1). In PTC tumors, compared with the wild-type BRAF, BRAF V600E was associated with over-expression and hypomethylation of the WIPF1 gene. In thyroid cancer

Thyroid storm Thyroid storm - First10EM Search Thyroid storm by | Published - Updated | Case A 45 year old woman with a past medical history of hyperthyroidism is brought into the emergency department by her partner. She has had urinary tract symptoms for the last 2 days, but now she looks really sick. She has been having diarrhea and crampy abdominal pain. She is having a hard time concentrating, is tremulous, and drenched in sweat. Her vital signs at triage include an irregular heart rate (...) of 142 and a temperature of 39.5 degrees celsius. My approach The diagnosis of thyroid storm is clinical. Laboratory testing, although helpful, does not distinguish between thyrotoxicosis and thyroid storm. 1 Treatment should be started immediately based on clinical findings. 2 The key clinical features are: fever, altered mental status, and signs of sympathetic over-activity. Support airway and respiration as necessary. Manage agitation. Significant agitation can interfere with the other urgent

In addition to a summary of large clinical trials, it provides previously unpublished results (...) Calculated Parameters of Thyroid Homeostasis: Emerging Tools for Differential Diagnosis and Clinical Research Although technical problems of thyroid testing have largely been resolved by modern assay technology, biological variation remains a challenge. This applies to subclinical thyroid disease, non-thyroidal illness syndrome, and those 10% of hypothyroid patients, who report impaired quality of life, despite normal thyrotropin (TSH) concentrations under levothyroxine (L-T4) replacement
