141. Effectiveness of acupuncture intervention for neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial. (Full text)

Effectiveness of acupuncture intervention for neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial. Neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis has become a common health problem worldwide among >40-year-old adults. Acupuncture intervention is one of the most popular treatment measures for this disorder. However, evidence for its efficacy in relieving neck pain and recovering neck physiological function has not been established in randomized, placebo (...) -controlled trials. The primary aim of this trial is to assess the efficacy and safety of active acupuncture compared with sham acupuncture intervention for neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis. We will conduct a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial comparing active acupuncture with placebo (sham acupuncture). A total of 456 patients with neck pain caused by cervical spondylosis who meet the eligibility criteria from outpatient clinics of the Second People's Hospital

142. Effect of total disc replacement on atypical symptoms associated with cervical spondylosis. (Full text)

Effect of total disc replacement on atypical symptoms associated with cervical spondylosis. To determine the efficacy of total disc replacement (TDR) for the treatment of cervical spondylosis associated with atypical symptoms. In this retrospective study, patients with myelopathy and/or radiculopathy related to cervical spondylosis that were treated with TDR were contacted by phone. Atypical symptoms involved in the questionnaire included dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision (...) . The mean follow-up was 34.6 months. There were 47 males and 26 females (mean age 48.9 years). Of the 73 patients, 41 were diagnosed with myelopathy; 13 with radiculopathy; and 19 with mixed-type spondylosis. The incidence of each symptom before surgery was dizziness (46.6%), tinnitus (41.1 %), facial flushing and sweating (41.1 %), palpitations (39.7%), headache (35.6%), hypomnesia (30.1%), nausea and vomiting (20.5%), blurred vision (20.5%), and gastroenterologic discomfort (5.5%). 144. Analysis of Radiography Findings of Ossification of Nuchal Ligament of Cervical Spine in Patients With Cervical Spondylosis. (PubMed)

Analysis of Radiography Findings of Ossification of Nuchal Ligament of Cervical Spine in Patients With Cervical Spondylosis. Retrospective clinical data analysis. This study was conducted to investigate the incidence, related factors, and radiography findings of ossification of the nuchal ligament (ONL) in patient with cervical spondylosis, which could serve as a basis for further studies of the relationships between ONL and cervical spondylosis.Injury to nuchal ligament, which might cause ONL (...) , may aggravate cervical spine instability, leading to cervical spondylosis. Thus, it is important to understand the characteristics of ONL in patients who are diagnosed with cervical spondylosis.Medical records of 372 patients with cervical spondylosis were reviewed. Data analysis included patients' sex, age, location and classification of ONL, and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). Radiological features were evaluated by lateral plain radiography and computed tomography

[Treatment of cervical spondylosis by spinal balancing combined with intervention of pathway of qi: a randomized controlled study]. To compare the difference in the efficacy of cervical spondylosis between the combined therapy of spinal balancing and the intervention of pathway of qi and the conventional acupuncture and massage therapy. Two hundred and seventy-four cases of cervical spondylosis were randomized into a spinal balancing group and a conventional acupuncture group, 137 cases in each (...) , which was better than 69.3% (95/137) in the conventional acupuncture group (P < 0.05). In terms of the types of cervical spondylosis, from high to low, the efficacy sequence was cervical type, nerve root type, vertebral artery type, sympathetic nerve type and spinal cord type. The combined therapy of spinal balancing and the intervention of pathway of qi achieves the superior efficacy on various types of cervical spondylosis as compared with the conventional acupuncture and massage therapy

147. The Biomechanics of Cervical Spondylosis (Full text)

The Biomechanics of Cervical Spondylosis Aging is the major risk factor that contributes to the onset of cervical spondylosis. Several acute and chronic symptoms can occur that start with neck pain and may progress into cervical radiculopathy. Eventually, the degenerative cascade causes desiccation of the intervertebral disc resulting in height loss along the ventral margin of the cervical spine. This causes ventral angulation and eventual loss of lordosis, with compression of the neural (...) and vascular structures. The altered posture of the cervical spine will progress into kyphosis and continue if the load balance and lordosis is not restored. The content of this paper will address the physiological and biomechanical pathways leading to cervical spondylosis and the biomechanical principles related to the surgical correction and treatment of kyphotic progression.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic results and complications of anterior cervical discectomy fusion (ACDF) and anterior cervical corpectomy fusion (ACCF (...) ) in the treatment of multi-level cervical spondylosis. We reviewed and analyzed papers published from Jan 1969 to Dec 2010 regarding the comparison of ACDF and ACCF for multilevel cervical spondylosis. Statistical comparisons were made when appropriate.Twelve studies were included in this systematic review. Blood loss was greater for ACCF compared with ACDF. Similarly, the rate of graft dislodgement in ACCF was higher than that in ACDF. Nonunion rates were 18.4% for 2-level ACDF and 37.3% for 3-level ACDF
