Skin color parameters and Fitzpatrick phototypes in estimating the risk of skin cancer: A case-control study in the Polish population. Light skin pigmentation is a known risk factor for skin cancer.Skin color parameters and Fitzpatrick phototypes were evaluated in terms of their usefulness in predicting the risk of skin cancer.A case-control study involved 133 individuals with skin cancer (100 with basal cell carcinoma, 21 with squamous cell carcinoma, 12 with melanoma) and 156 healthy (...) individuals. All of them had skin phototype determined and spectrophotometric skin color measurements were done on the inner surfaces of their arms and on the buttock. What devices to use or not use in skin of color. Lasers and light sources, as well as other energy devices, including radiofrequency, ultrasound, and cold-based therapies, can be used for treatment of aging, dyschromic, or texturally uneven skin. In patients with ethnic skin (ie, skin of color), energy devices are used more cautiously to avoid adverse events. The most common and concerning adverse event is postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Lower fluence, longer pulse durations, and careful (...) device selection can mitigate the risk of scarring and pigmentary abnormality. This article discusses the importance of a correct and consistent skin care regimen and the various cutaneous issues that should be considered when prescribing a skin care regimen for patients with darker skin types. Race and Skin Color in Latino Health: An Analytic Review. We examined 22 articles to compare Black Latinos/as' with White Latinos/as' health and highlight findings and limitations in the literature. We searched 1153 abstracts, from the earliest on record to those available in 2016. We organized the articles into domains grounded on a framework that incorporates the effects of race on Latinos/as' health and well-being: health and well-being, immigration, psychosocial factors, and contextual (...) factors. Most studies in this area are limited by self-reported measures of health status, inconsistent use of race and skin color measures, and omission of a wider range of immigration-related and contextual factors. We give recommendations for future research to explain the complexity in the Latino/a population regarding race, and we provide insight into Black Latinos/as experiences.

Latitudinal Clines of the Human Vitamin D Receptor and Skin Color Genes The well-documented latitudinal clines of genes affecting human skin color presumably arise from the need for protection from intense ultraviolet radiation (UVR) vs. the need to use UVR for vitamin D synthesis. Sampling 751 subjects from a broad range of latitudes and skin colors, we investigated possible multilocus correlated adaptation of skin color genes with the vitamin D receptor gene (VDR), using a vector correlation (...) metric and network method called BlocBuster. We discovered two multilocus networks involving VDR promoter and skin color genes that display strong latitudinal clines as multilocus networks, even though many of their single gene components do not.
