The effect of meat products enriched with plant sterols and minerals on serum lipids and blood pressure. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of non-esterified plant sterol-enriched and mineral-enriched low-fat and low-salted meat products compared with control meat products, on serum total and lipoprotein lipids and blood pressure in subjects with mildly to moderately elevated serum cholesterol concentration. A randomised, placebo-controlled, single-blind, repeated measure (...) , the serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration decreased 4.9+/-7.5% (P<0.05) and 4.6+/-11.3% (not significant), respectively, compared with the control period. A comparison of serum magnesium sulfate levels in pregnant women with severe preeclampsia between intravenous and intramuscular magnesium sulfate regimens: a randomized controlled trial. The frequency of blood samples that achieved therapeutic level was lower in the group of maintenance with intravenous regimen than the intramuscular regimen significantly at 15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 minutes after loading dose. The mean level of serum magnesium sulfate in the intravenous group was significantly (...) lower than intramuscular group. This study supported to choose the maintenance by intramuscular regimen. [Influence of fluid replacement on serum magnesium concentration and proper magnesium supplementation during general anesthesia]. We have studied the influence of fluid replacement on serum magnesium (Mg2+) concentrations, and studied proper Mg2+ supplementation during general anesthesia. Thirty eight patients undergoing elective surgery randomly received: Mg(2+)-free acetated Ringer solution (Group I, n = 15), acetated Ringer solution containing 0.5 mmol.l-1 of Mg2+ (Group II, n = 6), 1.0 (...) mmol.l-1 of Mg2+ (Group III, n = 7), 2.0 mmol.l-1 of Mg2+ (Group IV, n = 6), or 4.0 mmol.l-1 of Mg2+ (Group V, n = 4). Measurements were made on serum and urine Mg2+ concentrations during anesthesia. In Group I, the serum Mg2+ concentrations decreased in correspondence with the water balance. Nutrient intake, blood pressure, serum and urinary prostaglandins and serum thromboxane B2 in a controlled trial with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet. Fifty-nine healthy omnivores volunteered for a randomized crossover trial with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian (L-O-V) diet. Twenty-one 1-day diet records were kept throughout the project as a means of assessing food and nutrient intakes, and samples of serum and urine were assayed to evaluate change in prostanoid metabolism. The effects of high oral magnesium supplementation on blood pressure, serum lipids and related variables in apparently healthy Japanese subjects. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, thirty-three subjects were allocated to undergo either a 4-week treatment with oral Mg supplementation (Mg(OH)2; 411-548 mg Mg/d) or a placebo. The urinary excretion of Mg increased significantly in both the first 2 weeks and the following 2 weeks of Mg supplementation, while the urinary Na excretion also (...) ratio decreased significantly during the last 2 weeks of Mg supplementation compared with the first 2 weeks and the run-in periods, but this did not occur in the placebo group. These results suggest that Mg supplementation may lower blood pressure through the suppression of the adrenergic activity and possible natriuresis, while also improving the serum lipids through the activation of LCAT in human subjects.

The aim of this study was to evaluate if a nutritional dose of magnesium given orally changes the blood pressure in untreated hypertensive patients and if orally-given magnesium had any influence on serum and muscle magnesium and potassium.
