Bicarbonate administration was shown to produce a more alkaline pH in the jejunum, while an alkaline pH was found in some epileptics on phenytoin therapy. Effects of folic acid plus levothyroxine on serum homocysteine level in hypothyroidism. Rise in serum homocysteine level may be associated with higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine can partly diminish serum homocysteine level. Folic acid participates in homocysteine metabolic cycle in the human body. The effect of concomitant administration of folic acid and levothyroxine on serum homocysteine level was evaluated in the present study.Sixty patients (...) with hypothyroidism participated in this double-blinded clinical trial study. They were divided into two equal groups; Group A received oral levothyroxine 50-100 µg daily. Folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation lowers plasma homocysteine but has no effect on serum bone turnover markers in elderly women: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. An elevated homocysteine level is a newly recognized risk factor for osteoporosis. Older individuals may have elevated homocysteine levels due to inadequate folate intake and/or lower absorption of vitamin B(12). The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an impact of folic acid and vitamin B (...) randomly assigned to receive either a daily folic acid (800 μg) and vitamin B(12) (1000 μg) (n = 17) or a matching placebo (n = 14) for 4 months.
