1. Prevalence of low folate deficiency after wheat flour supplementation – should we still measure serum folate? Full Text available with Trip Pro

Prevalence of low folate deficiency after wheat flour supplementation – should we still measure serum folate? To determine the frequency of folic acid deficiency in consecutive serum folate determinations and to determine whether there was a significant decrease in serum folate deficiency after folate was added to wheat flour.A retrospective descriptive observational study was performed of consecutive folate measurements at the Hospital Privado Universitario, Cordoba, Argentina. Two cohorts (...) was documented. In the studied population, the prevalence of serum folic acid deficiency after folate supplementation was low at 1.73%. There was a significant decrease in folate deficiency after folate was added to wheat flour. Given the low prevalence of folic acid deficiency observed in this and similar studies, and the observed change with supplementation, we conclude that routine measurement of serum folate is of limited clinical use.

3. Folate intake, serum folate, and risk of esophageal cancer: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis. (Abstract)

Folate intake, serum folate, and risk of esophageal cancer: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis. The dose-response relationship between folate and the risk of esophageal cancer (EC) is not clear. To further elucidate their relationships, we carried out a dose-response meta-analysis of folate intake, serum folate, and the risk of EC. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched for observational studies until September 2016. Then, we (...) carried out a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis using Stata 14.0 software. Subgroup analyses were further carried out according to study characteristics and adjustment confounders. A total of 23 studies with a total of 3886 patients were enrolled in this study. The pooled odds ratios for EC in the highest versus the lowest levels of folate intake and serum folate were 0.64 (0.54-0.76, P<0.001) and 0.45 (0.19-1.07, P=0.071), respectively. Dose-response meta-analyses were carried out

4. Fluorescence lateral flow competitive protein binding assay for the assessment of serum folate concentrations. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Fluorescence lateral flow competitive protein binding assay for the assessment of serum folate concentrations. Folate is a micronutrient required for the production of new cells, making it a key factor in early fetal development and ensuring normal growth and maintenance of health. The increase in consumption of folate due to increased periconceptional supplementation and fortification of grains in many countries has led to a decrease in occurrence of folate deficiency and a class of birth (...) , sophisticated laboratory infrastructure, and highly-trained personnel. Our lateral flow assay is low-cost, easy to use, and allows a user to assess folate insufficiency at the point of care in less than 40 minutes. We evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of our assay in 24 human serum samples, including 8 samples with folate concentrations less than 10.0 nmol/L and 14 samples less than 13.4 nmol/L using the Immulite 2000 commercial assay as a reference standard. The sensitivity and specificity were
