5. Women’s Mid-Life Night Sweats and 2-Year Bone Mineral Density Changes: A Prospective, Observational Population-Based Investigation from the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos) (PubMed)

Women’s Mid-Life Night Sweats and 2-Year Bone Mineral Density Changes: A Prospective, Observational Population-Based Investigation from the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos) Women's hot flushes and night sweats, collectively called vasomotor symptoms (VMS), are maximal (79%) in late perimenopause. The evidence describing whether VMS are associated with loss of areal bone mineral density (BMD) is mixed. We examined baseline and 2-year data for 1570 randomly selected women aged 43 (...) ⁻63 in the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos), a prospective Canada-wide study; we used linear regression to assess the relationship of night sweats (VMSn) with BMD and its changes. Clinically important VMSn occurred for 12.2%. Women with VMSn were slightly younger (54.5 vs. 55.3 years, p = 0.02) and less likely to use sex steroid therapies (39.8% vs. 51.4%, p < 0.05). BMD at the lumbar spine (L1-4), femoral neck (FN) and total hip (TH) were similar between those with/without VMSn

8. Palpitations, headache and night sweats caused by a retroperitoneal mass: case report and short review (PubMed)

Palpitations, headache and night sweats caused by a retroperitoneal mass: case report and short review A 31-year-old West-African female attended our emergency department presenting with palpitations, headache, fatigue and night sweats during the last 2 weeks. Clinical examination revealed tachycardia and a painful, palpable infraumbilical mass. Ultrasound examination of the abdomen showed a smoothly rounded soft-tissue mass with a diameter of 5 cm. On contrast-enhanced CT, a prevertebral mass (...) with intense contrast enhancement was seen, located caudal to the aortic bifurcation. On PET-CT, there were no distant 18F-FDG-avid locoregional nodes or masses. A tumourectomy was successfully performed, during which manipulation of the retroperitoneal tumour triggered a sharp rise in blood pressure. Histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of a paraganglioma. The clinical complaints of headache, paroxysmal palpitations and night sweats disappeared postoperatively. This case is a classic presentation

11. Night sweats: it may be hemochromatosis. (PubMed)

Night sweats: it may be hemochromatosis. The aim of this case report is to show that hemochromatosis can present, unusually, with night sweats. At presentation, hemochromatosis often tends to have non-specific symptoms, making it easy to misdiagnose, especially if it presents with rare symptoms. Misdiagnosis of hemochromatosis can lead to lethal outcomes, given it can cause multiple organ dysfunctions if left untreated and hence the need to identify it early on. The case we present is a 41-year (...) -old woman with previously undiagnosed hemochromatosis complaining of night sweats. She thought she was menopausal. The diagnosis of hemochromatosis was made solely on investigations given that she did not have any other symptoms other than night sweats. Her serum iron concentrations were within the normal range due to menstruation. It is uncommon for women to present with symptoms of hemochromatosis during their reproductive life since their iron concentration is kept within normal range through

13. Hot flushes and night sweats symptom profiles over a 17-year period in mid-aged women: The role of hysterectomy with ovarian conservation. (PubMed)

Hot flushes and night sweats symptom profiles over a 17-year period in mid-aged women: The role of hysterectomy with ovarian conservation. There is limited research on hot flushes and night sweats in women with a hysterectomy with ovarian conservation. We aimed to describe the patterns of these symptoms in a cohort of Australian women and to investigate the relationship between distinct symptom patterns and hysterectomy status.Repeated-measures latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify (...) hot flushes and night sweats symptom patterns across seven surveys (over 17 years) in the mid-cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the associations of the symptom patterns in women with a hysterectomy with ovarian conservation (n=1129) versus women without a hysterectomy (n=4977).A higher proportion of women with a hysterectomy than of those without experienced a constant pattern of hot flushes (15% versus 30%) and night

19. Night Sweats as a Prominent Symptom of a Patient Presenting with Pulmonary Embolism (PubMed)

Night Sweats as a Prominent Symptom of a Patient Presenting with Pulmonary Embolism Pulmonary embolism is a common, potentially fatal disease. Making the correct diagnosis early can significantly reduce mortality and morbidity. We report the first case of drenching night sweats as one of the presenting symptoms of submassive pulmonary embolism. One week after undergoing laparotomic sigmoidectomy for diverticulitis, our patient started to experience drenching night sweats and pleuritic back pain (...) . CT identified bilateral main stem pulmonary artery emboli, and treatment was initiated with subcutaneous enoxaparin injections. Imaging and laboratory workup failed to reveal any other explanation for the night sweats. Patient was discharged on rivaroxaban, and he reported complete resolution of symptoms upon the 3-month follow-up visit and 9-month follow-up call. Based on our case we propose night sweats to be a potential presenting symptom of pulmonary embolism. Our observation can help make

20. Self-compassion weakens the association between hot flushes and night sweats and daily life functioning and depression. (PubMed)

Self-compassion weakens the association between hot flushes and night sweats and daily life functioning and depression. Some women find hot flushes and night sweats (HFNS) to interfere more in daily life and mood than others. Psychological resources may help to explain these individual differences. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of self-compassion, defined as healthy way of relating toward the self when dealing with difficult experiences, as a potential moderator (...) of the relationship between HFNS and daily life activities, which in turn influences symptoms of depression. This was a cross-sectional study using questionnaire data from 206 women aged 40-60 who were currently experiencing hot flushes and/or night sweats. Path analysis was used to model relationships among menopausal factors (HFNS frequency and daily interference ratings), self-compassion and mood.Hot flush interference in daily activities and depressive symptoms. On average, women experienced 4.02 HFNS per day
