animals displayed a drastic decline in heart rate (HR) during the exercise challenge, likely a consequence of neurogenic shock. Furthermore, over time, all groups developed a progressive inability to maintain BP within a narrow range during the exercise challenge despite displaying normal hemodynamic parameters at rest. Echocardiography of T10 animals revealed no persistent signs of cardiac dysfunction; T3 animals exhibited a transient decline in systolic function that returned to preinjury levels

129. Shenfu Injection Improves Arterial Vascular Reactivity

by (Responsible Party): Jianfeng Xie, Southeast University, China Study Details Study Description Go to Brief Summary: Septic shock is a common and critical illness in ICU.The vascular dysfunction of septic shock is manifested by vasospasm and decreased arterial vascular reactivity . Current studies have shown that the main mechanisms of vasospasm and decreased arterial vascular reactivity include increased vasospasm and down-regulation of receptor sensitivity , and eventually cause a decrease in vascular (...) smooth muscle contractility.A large number of vasodilators are released during septic shock, in which inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and prostacyclin (PGI2) are important vasodilators leading to septic shock vasospasm. At present, vasoactive drugs are widely used in clinically to improve vascular tone and are important means of circulation support. However, when the infection is heavier, the reactivity of the blood vessels to the vasoactive drugs is lowered, and it is difficult for the large

the first case of traumatic basilar artery occlusion caused by entrapment into an originally existing bone defect. A 67-year-old man with a history of treatment for intracranial aneurysm suffered multiple traumatic injuries in a fall. On arrival at our hospital, he presented with neurogenic shock with quadriplegia. Computed tomography (CT) showed small epidural hematoma, C4-6 cervical spinous process fracture, and Th2-3 vertebral body fracture. CT angiography revealed occlusion of the basilar artery

133. Dorsal and ventral hippocampal adult-born neurons contribute to context fear memory. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Dorsal and ventral hippocampal adult-born neurons contribute to context fear memory. The hippocampus contains one of the few neurogenic niches within the adult brain-the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus. The functional significance of adult-born neurons in this region has been characterized using context fear conditioning, a Pavlovian paradigm in which animals learn to associate a location with danger. Ablation or silencing of adult-born neurons impairs both acquisition and recall (...) in a hippocampus-independent tone-shock freezing paradigm. Silencing adult-born neurons modestly reduced generalization of fear. Our data indicate that adult-born neurons in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus contribute to both memory acquisition and recall. The comparatively large behavioral effects of silencing a small number of adult-born neurons suggest that these neurons make a unique and powerful contribution to hippocampal function.

was paralyzed in the lower body. The patient underwent an urgent hernia repair and bowel resection. Postoperatively, he developed severe septic shock. On postoperative day (POD) 6, wound dehiscence due to colonic anastomotic leakage with diffuse peritonitis was diagnosed, but he was unable to undergo re-operation because of refractory severe septic shock combined with neurogenic shock due to the cervical cord injury. The patient was treated with AVS therapy. He gradually recovered from septic shock

efforts should be mentioned to reconstruct the complete connectome of the larval brain featuring a total of about 10,000 neurons and the development of neurogenic tools that allow individual manipulation of each neuron. By contrast, standardized behavioral assays that are commonly used to analyze learning and memory in Drosophila larvae exhibit no such technical development. Most commonly, a simple assay with Petri dishes and odor containers is used; in this method, the animals must be manually (...) shocks. We showed that Drosophila larvae trained with the Maggot Instructor establish an odor-specific memory, which is independent of handling and non-associative effects. The Maggot Instructor will allow to investigate the large collections of genetically modified larvae in a short period and with minimal human resources. Therefore, the Maggot Instructor should be able to help extensive behavioral experiments in Drosophila larvae to keep up with the current technical advancements. In the longer

139. The Non-Surgical Management of Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)

to make patients independent with self management strategies. Upon clinical examination, patients with moderate to severe OA of the hip or knee commonly exhibit weakness within regional muscles surrounding or local to the affected joint. The literature indicates that, although the exact pathogenesis of OA is unknown, weakness often precedes or accompanies the osteoarthritic process. Whether this weakness is a result of a neurogenic mechanism (autogenic inhibition from pain), age related decrease (...) of muscle volume (sarcopenia), or disuse is unclear. However, a combination of these contributing factors is most likely. Regardless of the cause of the weakness, in cases where hip or knee OA progresses it typically leads to disuse, decreased shock absorbing capabilities, and decreased load transfer capabilities (contralaterally and ipsilaterally), as well as overall deconditioning (decreased aerobic capacity). It is also well documented within the literature that muscle weakness within key muscle

Complications n Patients may uncommonly present with early complications of sepsis or raised intracranial pressure which include: – Septic shock; – Disseminated intravascular (...) coagulopathy (DIC); – Purpura fulminans; – Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome; – Cerebral herniation; – Neurogenic pulmonary oedema (rare). 17,18 About 83% of appropriately treated children will have an uncomplicated recovery.
