103. Massage can (re-)activate the lower limb sensorimotor representation of older adult inpatients. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Massage can (re-)activate the lower limb sensorimotor representation of older adult inpatients. Understanding how changes in afferent signal processing may impact the sensorimotor processes is essential for physical therapists whose objective is to actively improve the reorganization of motor function in patients suffering from sensorimotor system disturbance. Because the sensorimotor processes are slowed with the advance in age, we examined whether a single massage session can reactivate (...) the sensorimotor processes of older adult inpatients. Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental (with massage) or control (without massage) groups. Massage was realized on both feet with 7.30 min spent on each foot (Experiment 1), the right foot or the right foot and knee for 10 min (Experiment 2). Body and nonbody mental rotation tasks were used to assess the lower limb motor representation before (pretest), immediately after (Posttest 1) and 24 hr after the massage (Posttest 2). Massage-based bedtime routine: impact on sleep and mood in infants and mothers. Establishment of a consistent bedtime routine is often recommended to families with young children with sleep difficulties. However, there are limited studies assessing specific bedtime routines in the treatment of infant and toddler sleep disturbances. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a massage-based bedtime routine on infant sleep, maternal sleep, and maternal mood. A total of 123 (...) and mother night wakings, maternal perceptions of child sleep and mood (ie, sleep problem, bedtime ease, and morning mood), and improvements in maternal sleep quality. No comparative changes were seen in the control group. Notably, other than number of night wakings for both the child and the mother, there were no changes in other sleep patterns including sleep onset latency, duration of night wakings, longest stretch of sleep, or sleep duration. This study supports recommending a massage-based routine

107. [Classical Massage and Acupuncture in Chronic Back Pain - Non-Inferiority Randomised Trial]. (Abstract)

[Classical Massage and Acupuncture in Chronic Back Pain - Non-Inferiority Randomised Trial]. Currently, there is a need for scientific evidence on the efficacy of classical massage therapy for chronic, unspecific back pain, especially for the improvement in functional impairment and long-term pain reduction. According to the National Health Care Guidelines, classical massage for nonspecific low back pain may only be prescribed in combination with exercise therapy and a share of the remuneration (...) . Acupuncture, on the other hand, is recognised in the guidelines as an independent treatment for chronic back pain and is remunerated by health insurance companies. This raises the question of whether classical massage therapy is not inferior compared to acupuncture, based on the therapy of the GERAC study. The Clinic of Naturopathy in Blankenstein, Hattingen uses classical massage therapy subjectively successfully in patients with back pain. To objectify the success of the treatment, a randomised

111. Roller massage decreases spinal excitability to the soleus. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Roller massage decreases spinal excitability to the soleus. Roller massage (RM) interventions have shown acute increases in range of motion (ROM) and pain pressure threshold (PPT). It is unclear whether the RM-induced increases can be attributed to changes in neural or muscle responses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of altered afferent input via application of RM on spinal excitability, as measured with the Hoffmann (H-) reflex. A randomized within-subjects design (...) in modulation of the inhibition. Roller massage-induced neural modulation of spinal excitability may explain previously reported increases in ROM and PPT. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Recent evidence indicates that the benefits of foam rolling and roller massage are primarily accrued through neural mechanisms. The present study attempts to determine the neuromuscular response to roller massage interventions. We provide strong evidence of roller massage-induced neural modulation of spinal excitability to the soleus
