21. Acute lindane poisoning with development of muscle necrosis. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Acute lindane poisoning with development of muscle necrosis. A 35-year-old man ingested food contaminated with lindane, an insecticide containing almost pure gamma hexachlorocyclohexane. Grand mal seizures and severe acidemia developed rapidly. The seizures recurred for nearly 2 hours, then ceased. In addition, the patient had muscle weakness and pain, headaches, episodic hypertension, myoglobinuria, acute renal failure and anemia. Pancreatitis developed 13 days after the ingestion of lindane (...) . A muscle biopsy on the 15th day of illness demonstrated widespread necrosis and regeneration of muscle fibres. The patient's condition improved and he was discharged 24 days after the onset of his illness. During the year following the poisoning the patient noted difficulty with recent memory, loss of libido and easy fatigability. One year after lindane ingestion the results of physical examination, including those for muscle power and bulk, were normal.

Gamma-BHC/Cereclor—a new, long-acting lindane formulation for malaria control Sorption of insecticides by muds and other materials used in the construction of native huts prolongs their duration of action or persistence. The use of gamma-BHC as a residual insecticide has been limited by the fact that its sorption by most materials is of a low order, so that it is comparatively short acting. If gamma-BHC is melted with a resin, the solid solution can be converted into a water-dispersible

24. Ivermectin for Parasitic Skin Infections of Scabies: A Review of Comparative Clinical Effectiveness, Cost-Effectiveness, and Guidelines

, and lindane according to one systematic review and more effective than sulphur 10% ointment according to one randomized controlled trial of limited quality. Oral ivermectin may be associated with fewer patients with adverse events than sulfur and more patients with adverse events than synthetic pyrethrins.Topical ivermectin may be more effective than or no different from other scabicides. There was no difference found in clinical effectiveness between topical ivermectin and permethrin in the systematic (...) reviews. According to one systematic review, topical ivermectin may be more effective in treating scabies compared with malathion, lindane, crotamiton, and benzyl benzoate, as well as sulfur at one to two weeks after treatment initiation. Topical permethrin was associated with higher percentages of patients with adverse events compared with synthetic pyrethrins and malathion and lower percentages compared with sulfur. While findings of clinical effectiveness of oral and topical ivermectin were largely

25. What is the most effective treatment for scabies?

answer: Topical permethrin is the most effective treatment for classic scabies (strength of recommendation [SOR]: A, meta-analyses with consistent results). Topical lindane and crotamiton are inferior to permethrin but appear equivalent to each other and benzyl benzoate, sulfur, and natural synergized pyrethrins (SOR: B, limited randomized trials). Although not as effective as topical permethrin, oral ivermectin is an effective treatment compared with placebo (SOR: B,a single small randomized trial

Lindane toxicity often occurs from excessive external (dermal) exposure or accidental oral exposure. Chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides affect neuronal voltage gated sodium channels. They are also gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonists. This results in hyperexcitability and irritability of both central and peripheral neurons . Chlorinated hydrocarbons also increase

and were 30⁻50 nm in length. There were about 120⁻150 tips in each nanocrystal. The formation of chestnut-like Au nanocrystals is ascribed to surfactant-induced preferential growth of seeds along direction [111]. Importantly, the chestnut-like Au configuration displayed powerful surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance (enhance factor > 10⁷), owing to the high density of tips. Further, such film was used as a SERS substrate for the detection of lindane (γ-666) molecules (the typical
