Association between the number of fungiform papillae on the tip of the tongue and sensory taste perception in children Background: To measure sensory taste perception in children with an accurate and reproducible method is challenging and objective measurement methods are scarce. Objective: Aim was to characterize sensory taste perception, by measuring the number of fungiform papillae (FP) and to investigate whether the number of FP is associated with sensitivity for bitter taste and with taste (...) preference (30 vs. 25 papillae, p=0.06). Results show no association between the number of FP and neither the bitter taste thresholds nor taste preferences for sweet, salty and umami. Conclusion: Bitter taste threshold might be independent of the number of FP, while the perception of fat was associated with the number of FP.

A clinical analysis of 58 chinese cases of pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue. Pigmented fungiform papillae of the tongue (PFPT) is a disorder in which the fungiform papillae of the tongue have abnormal coloration. However, Chinese-specific clinical data for PFPT are lacking.To determine the prevalence and characteristics of PFPT among the Chinese population.A survey was carried out using a clinical examination and a questionnaire on 14,346 first-time outpatients in our dermatology (...) department, and 58 cases of PFPT were subsequently diagnosed.The prevalence of PFPT was 0.4% among dermatological outpatients. All patients had pin-sized, brownish fungiform papillae on the tip, lateral or dorsal parts of the tongue. Of the three subtypes, type I was the most common (87.93%). Ephrin-B/EphB signaling is required for normal innervation of lingual gustatory papillae The innervation of taste buds is an excellent model system for studying the guidance of axons during targeting because of their discrete nature and the high fidelity of innervation. The pregustatory epithelium of fungiform papillae is known to secrete diffusible axon guidance cues such as BDNF and Sema3A that attract and repel, respectively, geniculate ganglion axons during targeting, but diffusible factors (...) . These in vitro effects were independent of the neurotrophin used to promote outgrowth, but were reduced by elevated levels of laminin. In vivo, mice null for EphB1 and EphB2 exhibited decreased gustatory innervation of fungiform papillae.
