841. Evaluation of 0.05% levocabastine versus 4% sodium cromolyn in the allergen challenge model. (PubMed)

received the final dose of cromolyn in the pretreated eye and one drop of levocabastine in the fellow eye. Subjects were challenged and evaluated after 3, 5, and 10 minutes. Four hours after drug administration, subjects were rechallenged and evaluated after 3, 5, and 10 minutes.Levocabastine was significantly more effective than cromolyn in inhibiting itching, hyperemia, eyelid swelling, chemosis, and tearing after the initial challenge and 4-hour rechallenge (P < 0.05).These results suggest

swelling of the eyelids and tightness of the throat. The diagnosis was based on a positive skin prick test to his "own" ER compound, a positive prick test reaction to DGEBA, and a positive skin provocation test with the ER compound and DGEBA. The contact urticaria test reaction was strongly aggravated when the allergen was wiped off with an alcohol solution, apparently because the solution enhanced the penetration of the allergen. Our case is of interest, first, because contact urticaria from ER is very (...) Occupational contact urticaria from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin. Epoxy resin (ER) is a common cause of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), but contact urticaria from ER is very rare.A plastic-product worker first developed ACD from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin, and subsequent exposure resulted half a year later in contact urticaria: first with edema of the lips and eyelids, and later an urticarial reaction on the upper chest, with strong

Oculodermatological findings in workers with occupational exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Oculodermatological findings, such as hypersecretion of the Meibomian glands, swelling of the upper eyelids and hyperpigmentation of the conjunctivae are considered typical of "PCB poisoning." They were common clinical manifestations of yusho and yu-cheng, two epidemics in Japan and Taiwan caused by the ingestion of rice cooking oil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs

846. Orbital cellulitis. (PubMed)

Orbital cellulitis. Orbital cellulitis is an emergency. It may cause blindness and progress to life-threatening sequelae such as brain abscess, meningitis and cavernous sinus thrombosis. Successful management is dependent upon urgent referral and immediate treatment. Although isolated eyelid erythema and swelling usually indicate primary infection anterior to the orbital septum, they may also be the first signs of an underlying frontal or ethmoidal sinusitis. The condition always requires

847. Blepharochalasis. (PubMed)

Blepharochalasis. Blepharochalasis is an uncommon disorder distinguished by recurrent episodes of eyelid oedema in young patients. A hypertrophic form, manifested as fat herniation, and an atrophic form, manifested as fat atrophy, have been described. Ptosis with excellent levator function, laxity of the lateral canthal structures with rounding of the lateral canthal angle, nasal fat pad atrophy, and redundant eyelid skin develop after many episodes of eyelid swelling. Fine wrinkling, atrophy (...) , and telangiectasias characterise the excess eyelid skin. We describe four cases of this syndrome in which external levator aponeurosis tuck, blepharoplasty, lateral canthoplasty, and dermis fat grafts were used to correct atrophic blepharochalasis after the syndrome had run its course.

elements, 25 cases of solid silicone, and 27 cases of silicone sponge removal, the duration of indentation before removal was significantly longer with Miragel (91.9 months) than with solid silicone (10.6 months) and silicone sponges (18.6 months). In eyes treated with Miragel elements, swelling of the material with progressive limitation of ocular motility and protrusion of the buckle beneath the eyelids indicated its removal in 34 (89.5%) eyes. Infection of the buckle and erosion of the conjunctiva (...) Late swelling and removal of Miragel buckles: a comparison with silicone indentations. on symptoms and signs of the disease were assessed. All six patients complained of eyelid swelling or nodularity, and five had yellow discoloration of their eyelids. All lesions involved the eyelids and anterior orbit, and five were present bilaterally. Biopsy revealed necrobiotic xanthogranuloma in four patients and adult-onset xanthogranuloma in two patients. Triamcinolone acetonide was administered intralesionally as series of two to 25 injections. Local control was obtained in all six cases (...) LOCAL CORTICOSTEROID TREATMENT OF EYELID AND ORBITAL XANTHOGRANULOMA To demonstrate the efficacy of local corticosteroid therapy for the treatment of eyelid and orbital xanthogranuloma in adults. We performed a retrospective chart review of six patients receiving local triamcinolone acetonide (40 mg/mL) injections for the treatment of eyelid and orbital xanthogranuloma at the University of Michigan. 850. Eyelid sparganosis. (PubMed)

Eyelid sparganosis. To report a case of sparganosis in the muscle layer of the eyelid.Observational case report.A 67-year-old man with migratory painful swelling on the eyelid that was unresponsive to medications was evaluated and treated surgically.Computed tomography showed a 1.5 x 1.5-cm sized, thick-walled lesion and ultrasound biomicroscopy showed hypoechoic tubular and cystic lesions. During surgery, a white, thread-like plerocercoid, 7 cm in length was detected in the orbicularis muscle (...) of the lower eyelid. Histopathologic examination demonstrated the characteristic feature of the sparganum larva and foreign body granulomatous reaction. Serodiagnosis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was positive. Three months postoperatively, the lesion resolved completely.Although rare, sparganosis should be suspected in a moving eyelid mass unresponsive to the medical treatment.

851. Bilateral Kimura's disease of the eyelids. (PubMed)

Bilateral Kimura's disease of the eyelids. A case of Kimura's disease affecting the eyelids bilaterally is reported in a 5-year-old boy of Afro-Caribbean extraction who has been followed for 12 years with repeat biopsies. He initially presented at 5 years of age with swelling of the left upper eyelid, left cervical lymphadenopathy, and eosinophilia. One year later he developed swelling of the right upper eyelid. There has been no change in the clinical appearance over the next 12 years (...) . Repeated biopsies of the eyelids showed a diffuse inflammatory infiltrate with many eosinophils and lymphocytes. A lymph node biopsy showed reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Immunohistochemistry using lymphoid markers showed a polyclonal pattern. Kimura's disease is a rare cause of eyelid swelling, particularly at such a young age and with bilateral involvement. This case demonstrates that bilateral orbital lymphoid lesions with cervical node involvement do not always imply lymphoma, but may have a benign

852. One-visit, randomized, placebo-controlled, conjunctival allergen challenge study of scanning and imaging technology for objective quantification of eyelid swelling in the allergic reaction with contralateral use of olopatadine and artificial tears. (PubMed)

One-visit, randomized, placebo-controlled, conjunctival allergen challenge study of scanning and imaging technology for objective quantification of eyelid swelling in the allergic reaction with contralateral use of olopatadine and artificial tears. The eyelids are more susceptible than other tissues to swelling, acute inflammation, and resultant long-term damage. However, no precise, objective means of measuring eyelid swelling in the clinical setting has been developed. The aims of this study (...) were to assess the novel use of scanning and imaging technology for quantifying eyelid swelling and to use positive and negative controls to assess this new method for potential use in future clinical studies of eyelid swelling and pharmaceutical agents' effects on it.This was a 1-visit, single-center, prospective, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study using the conjunctival allergen challenge (CAC). After baseline examinations and eyelid scanning, medication was instilled as follows

853. Blepharoptosis and upper eyelid swelling due to lipogranulomatous inflammation caused by silicone oil. (PubMed)

Blepharoptosis and upper eyelid swelling due to lipogranulomatous inflammation caused by silicone oil. Report of two patients who presented with unilateral upper eyelid swelling and ptosis 1 and 8 years, respectively, after vitreoretinal surgery with intraocular silicone oil.Report of two cases. In the first case, the oil was still present in the eye. In the second case, the intraocular oil and an epibulbar buckle had been removed 7 years earlier.Histopathology of upper eyelid skin (...) and preaponeurotic fat revealed lipogranulomatous inflammation.Leakage of intraocular silicone oil into the eyelid tissues may cause an inflammatory reaction resulting in eyelid swelling and ptosis. We presume that in the first patient, silicone oil had leaked from the eye during or after surgery; in the second patient, silicone oil had probably been left behind in the space previously occupied by the epibulbar buckle.

858. Eyelid swelling and erythema as the only signs of subperiosteal abscess. (PubMed)

Eyelid swelling and erythema as the only signs of subperiosteal abscess. On clinical grounds it is usually easy to distinguish between preseptal cellulitis, a cutaneous infection not threatening to vision, and orbital cellulitis, a potentially vision threatening infection of the orbital tissues generally arising from paranasal sinusitis. We recently cared for two patients with a clinical diagnosis of preseptal cellulitis who had CT scan evidence of subperiosteal abscess. Antibiotic therapy
