81. An embryological perspective on the early arthropod fossil record (PubMed)

An embryological perspective on the early arthropod fossil record Our understanding of the early evolution of the arthropod body plan has recently improved significantly through advances in phylogeny and developmental biology and through new interpretations of the fossil record. However, there has been limited effort to synthesize data from these different sources. Bringing an embryological perspective into the fossil record is a useful way to integrate knowledge from different disciplines

82. A Functional Perspective on the Embryology and Anatomy of the Cerebral Blood Supply (PubMed)

A Functional Perspective on the Embryology and Anatomy of the Cerebral Blood Supply The anatomy of the arterial system supplying blood to the brain can influence the development of arterial disease such as aneurysms, dolichoectasia and atherosclerosis. As the arteries supplying blood to the brain develop during embryogenesis, variation in their anatomy may occur and this variation may influence the development of arterial disease. Angiogenesis, which occurs mainly by sprouting of parent (...) arteries, is the first stage at which variations can occur. At day 24 of embryological life, the internal carotid artery is the first artery to form and it provides all the blood required by the primitive brain. As the occipital region, brain stem and cerebellum enlarge; the internal carotid supply becomes insufficient, triggering the development of the posterior circulation. At this stage, the posterior circulation consists of a primitive mesh of arterial networks that originate from projection

84. Foreseeing fates: a commentary on Manton (1928) ‘On the embryology of a mysid crustacean, Hemimysis lamornae’ (PubMed)

Foreseeing fates: a commentary on Manton (1928) ‘On the embryology of a mysid crustacean, Hemimysis lamornae’ Sidnie Manton became best known for her work on arthropod locomotion, and for proposing radical views on the evolution of arthropods that were accepted for a generation. However, her early training was as an embryologist, and the work that she carried out at the beginning of her career still stands as one of the major twentieth century contributions to the study of crustacean (...) embryology. Here, I review her first major paper, largely completed while she was a graduate student, describing embryonic development in Hemimysis lamornae, a small shrimp-like animal found in the seas around the UK. The clarity of her writing and the quality of her figures set a standard that laid the basis for subsequent work, and although not all of her conclusions have stood the test of time, they remain a standard reference for work today. This commentary was written to celebrate the 350th

Flow-related intracranial aneurysms associated with unfused arterial twigs relevant to different vascular anomalies: embryologic and hemodynamic considerations. Cerebrovascular anomalies resulting from the persistence of unfused embryonic twig-like vessels are associated with intracranial aneurysms. All records of patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms who were treated at our institution were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of aneurysm-associated, unfused, twig-like vessels

87. Embryological signaling pathways in Barrett's metaplasia development and malignant transformation; mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities. (PubMed)

Embryological signaling pathways in Barrett's metaplasia development and malignant transformation; mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities. Barrett's metaplasia of the esophagus (BE) is the precursor lesion of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a deadly disease with a 5-year overall survival of less than 20%. The molecular mechanisms of BE development and its transformation to EAC are poorly understood and current surveillance and treatment strategies are of limited efficacy. Increasing evidence (...) suggests that aberrant signaling through pathways active in the embryological development of the esophagus contributes to BE development and progression to EAC. We discuss the role that the Bone morphogenetic protein, Hedgehog, Wingless-Type MMTV Integration Site Family (WNT) and Retinoic acid signaling pathways play during embryological development of the esophagus and their contribution to BE development and malignant transformation. Modulation of these pathways provides new therapeutic opportunities

Embryology and adult urology – Not always mutually exclusive: A case report on true hermaphroditism at an adult urology clinic True hermaphrodite (TH) is one of the rarest varieties of disorders of sexual differentiation. Most patients present early in the life and are managed by pediatricians. We present a rare case of an adult TH which was first diagnosed by a urologist. We discuss the pathology of TH and its clinical relevance. Knowledge and awareness of embryology are vital to all
