81. Embryology and adult urology – Not always mutually exclusive: A case report on true hermaphroditism at an adult urology clinic Full Text available with Trip Pro

Embryology and adult urology – Not always mutually exclusive: A case report on true hermaphroditism at an adult urology clinic True hermaphrodite (TH) is one of the rarest varieties of disorders of sexual differentiation. Most patients present early in the life and are managed by pediatricians. We present a rare case of an adult TH which was first diagnosed by a urologist. We discuss the pathology of TH and its clinical relevance. Knowledge and awareness of embryology are vital to all

82. Flow-related intracranial aneurysms associated with unfused arterial twigs relevant to different vascular anomalies: embryologic and hemodynamic considerations. (Abstract)

Flow-related intracranial aneurysms associated with unfused arterial twigs relevant to different vascular anomalies: embryologic and hemodynamic considerations. Cerebrovascular anomalies resulting from the persistence of unfused embryonic twig-like vessels are associated with intracranial aneurysms. All records of patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms who were treated at our institution were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of aneurysm-associated, unfused, twig-like vessels

84. Embryological signaling pathways in Barrett's metaplasia development and malignant transformation; mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities. (Abstract)

Embryological signaling pathways in Barrett's metaplasia development and malignant transformation; mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities. Barrett's metaplasia of the esophagus (BE) is the precursor lesion of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), a deadly disease with a 5-year overall survival of less than 20%. The molecular mechanisms of BE development and its transformation to EAC are poorly understood and current surveillance and treatment strategies are of limited efficacy. Increasing evidence (...) suggests that aberrant signaling through pathways active in the embryological development of the esophagus contributes to BE development and progression to EAC. We discuss the role that the Bone morphogenetic protein, Hedgehog, Wingless-Type MMTV Integration Site Family (WNT) and Retinoic acid signaling pathways play during embryological development of the esophagus and their contribution to BE development and malignant transformation. Modulation of these pathways provides new therapeutic opportunities

95. Evidence-based medicine and its application in clinical preimplantation embryology. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Evidence-based medicine and its application in clinical preimplantation embryology. The randomized clinical trial (RCT) was developed to assess the efficacy of medical interventions by comparing a treatment group with a control group that did not receive treatment or received placebo. It has been evident that this study design is more suited to evaluation of drugs and less to complex interventions such as surgical procedures. The same can be said about assisted reproduction technology, which (...) clearly belongs in the complex category. Yet, there have been no specific guidelines for the design of RCT in clinical embryology. Moreover, the reliability of the published data from arbitrarily designed trials has not been debated. The near absence of allocation concealment and blinding and the difficulties inherent in randomizing oocytes and embryos in addition to patients require further consideration. This work evaluates systematic reviews to assess the efficacy of interventions, including

96. Embryology of familial (non-syndromic) brachydactyly of the hand. (Abstract)

Embryology of familial (non-syndromic) brachydactyly of the hand. Isolated familial non-syndromic brachydactyly is interesting from the embryological point of view because the phenotypes of isolated brachydactyly are frequently overlapping, yet they are caused by different gene mutations and the ring finger is frequently relatively preserved. We review the embryology of isolated familial brachydactyly with special attention to these two features. © The Author(s) 2013.
