THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF THE COMPOUND EYES OF INSECTS The apposition eyes of two diurnal insects, Sarcophaga bullata (Diptera) and Anax junius (Odonata), have been examined with the electron microscope. In the latter case only the rhabdom is described. The rhabdom of the fly consists of a central matrix and seven rhabdomeres, one for each retinula cell. The rhabdomeres show an ordered internal structure built up of transverse tubes, hexagonal in cross-section. These slender compartments running

HYDROGEN ION CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN THE ALIMENTARY TRACT OF INSECTS Larvae of Psychoda and of Chironomus (diptera) maintained in solutions of appropriate indicators show that the typical acidities (pH) prevailing within the several regions of the digestive tract are: esophagus 7.1; cardiac chamber 6.2; mesenteron 7.5; the latter being functionally an intestine. The acidity of the hindgut, pH 6.4, is due to the discharge of the malphigian tubules.

Molecular weight of DNA from four entomopoxviruses determined by electron microscopy. DNA was isolated from entomopoxviruses infected Amsacta moorei and Euxoa auxiliaris (Lepidoptera), Goeldichironomus holoprasinus (Diptera), and Othnonius batesi (Coleoptera) and compared with vertebrate virus DNA (vaccinia). After incubation in Pronase, sodium lauryl sulfate, and deoxycholate, poxvirus preparations shadowed with platinum and palladium revealed subcore particles 45 to 60 nm in diameter
