4. Feasibility and impact on daytime sleepiness of an experimental protocol inducing variable sleep duration in adolescents. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Feasibility and impact on daytime sleepiness of an experimental protocol inducing variable sleep duration in adolescents. Although most research on sleep and adolescent health has focused on how long each youth sleeps on average, variability in sleep duration may be just as problematic. Existing findings have been inconsistent and unable to address cause-effect relationships. This study piloted an experimental protocol to induce sleep variability and explore its impact on daytime sleepiness (...) :30pm to 12:30am) so that sleep duration averaged 7.5 hours across the condition with a standard deviation of 1.37 hours. Difficulty waking was assessed each morning and daytime sleepiness was assessed by end-of-condition parent- and adolescent-reports. Of the 20 participants who completed the study, 16 met the predetermined adherence definition. For those who were adherent, there were no differences in overall sleep duration between the stable and variable sleep conditions (p>.05) but adolescents

Prevalence of childhood obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and its role in daytime sleepiness. To investigate childhood obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and its role in daytime sleepiness among school-age children.A questionnaire survey was conducted with 25,211 children aged 6-15 (mean, 10.39) years attending 148 elementary and 71 middle schools in 10 prefectures across Japan and their parents. Questions concerned 4 sleep habit items (bedtime, sleep onset latency, wake time after sleep (...) onset, wake-up time) and 4 sleep disorder items (loud snoring, snorts/gasps, breathing pauses, seems very sleepy in the daytime). Total sleep time (TST) was calculated with sleep habits. Severe possible OSAS (p-OSAS) was defined as having loud snoring, snorts and gasps, or breathing pauses "frequently" (≥ 5 times per week), and mild p-OSAS was rated as having any of these "sometimes" (2-4 times per week). Severe daytime sleepiness was defined as seeming very sleepy "frequently" and mild daytime

8. Sleep and daytime sleepiness in adolescents with and without ADHD: differences across ratings, daily diary, and actigraphy. (Abstract)

Sleep and daytime sleepiness in adolescents with and without ADHD: differences across ratings, daily diary, and actigraphy. Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience greater sleep problems than their peers. Although adolescence is generally a developmental period characterized by insufficient sleep, few studies have used a multi-informant, multi-method design, to examine whether sleep differs in adolescents with and without ADHD.Targeted recruitment was used (...) to enroll an approximately equal number of eighth-grade adolescents (mean age = 13 years) with (n = 162) and without ADHD (n = 140). Adolescents and parents completed global ratings of sleep problems; adolescents, parents, and teachers completed ratings of daytime sleepiness. Adolescents wore actigraphs and completed a daily sleep diary for approximately 2 weeks.Adolescents with ADHD were more likely than adolescents without ADHD to obtain insufficient sleep on school days (per diary) and weekends (per

9. Genetic influences on the onset of obstructive sleep apnoea and daytime sleepiness: a twin study. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Genetic influences on the onset of obstructive sleep apnoea and daytime sleepiness: a twin study. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is one of the major sources of the excessive daily sleepiness, cognitive dysfunction, and it increases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Previous studies suggested a possible genetic influence, based on questionnaires but no objective genetic study was conducted to understand the exact variance underpinned by genetic factors.Seventy-one Hungarian twin pairs (...) involved from the Hungarian Twin Registry (48 monozygotic, MZ and 23 dizygotic, DZ pairs, mean age 51 ± 15 years) underwent overnight polysomnography (Somnoscreen Plus Tele PSG, Somnomedics GMBH, Germany). Apnoea hypopnea index (AHI), respiratory disturbance index (RDI) and oxygen desaturation index (ODI) were registered. Daytime sleepiness was measured with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Bivariate heritability analysis was applied. The prevalence of OSA was 41% in our study population

13. Daytime sleepiness may be an independent symptom unrelated to sleep quality in Parkinson's disease. (Abstract)

Daytime sleepiness may be an independent symptom unrelated to sleep quality in Parkinson's disease. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) may represent a disabling non-motor symptom in patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD). This is a secondary analysis of a previous study documenting the improvement of nocturnal sleep in PD patients treated by rotigotine vs placebo. Here we tested the supposition that EDS may represent a distinct PD non-motor symptom occurring independently of other sleep (...) -wake disorders; moreover, we verified whether EDS can be influenced by the improvement of nocturnal sleep in PD. In the present study, we evaluated the daytime sleepiness of PD patients treated with nocturnal administration of rotigotine (PD-Rot) vs placebo (PD-Pla), as measured by both subjective (Epworth Sleepiness Scale-ESS) and objective (Multiple Sleep Latency Test-MSLT) tools. We included 21 PD-Rot compared to 21 PD-Pla patients and documented no significant changes of both ESS and MSLT data

14. Altered irisin/BDNF axis parallels excessive daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnea patients. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Altered irisin/BDNF axis parallels excessive daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnea patients. Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a sleep-related breathing disorder, characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), paralleled by intermittent collapse of the upper airway. EDS may be the symptom of OSAHS per se but may also be due to the alteration of central circadian regulation. Irisin is a putative myokine and has been shown to induce BDNF expression in several (...) on the ESS.These results suggest that the irisin-BDNF axis influences subjective daytime sleepiness in OSAS patients reflected by the ESS. These results further imply the possible disruption of the circadian regulation in OSAHS. Future interventional studies are needed to confirm this observation.
