22042. Immunocytochemical expression of growth factors by odontogenic jaw cysts. (PubMed)

Immunocytochemical expression of growth factors by odontogenic jaw cysts. To determine the immunocytochemical pattern of expression of transforming growth factor (TGF) alpha, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and TGF beta in the three most common types of odontogenic jaw cyst.Growth factor expression was detected in paraffin wax sections of odontogenic cysts (27 odontogenic keratocysts, 10 dentigerous cysts, and 10 radicular cysts) using a streptavidin-biotin peroxidase technique with monoclonal (...) antibodies directed against TGF alpha (clone 213-4.4) and TGF beta (clone TB21) and a polyclonal antibody directed against EGF (Z-12).The epithelial linings of all cysts showed reactivity for TGF alpha which was mainly localised to basal and suprabasal layers. Odontogenic keratocyst linings expressed higher levels of TGF alpha than those of dentigerous and radicular cysts, with 89% (24/27) of odontogenic keratocysts exhibiting a strong positive reaction compared with 50% (five of 10) of dentigerous

22043. Effects of 2',3'-dideoxyinosine on Toxoplasma gondii cysts in mice. (PubMed)

Effects of 2',3'-dideoxyinosine on Toxoplasma gondii cysts in mice. The activity against Toxoplasma gondii of 2',3' dideoxyinosine (ddI), an anti-human immunodeficiency virus drug, was examined in an in vitro and in vivo study. Cell cultures infected with a strain known to cause chronic infections were used to show the dose-dependent effect of this drug compared with spiramycin and sulfadiazine. When a dose of 4 microg/ml was used, no infected THP-1 cells or parasites were found after 60 h (...) of incubation. An electron-microscopic study confirmed that after 12 h at 1 microg/ml, the few parasites observed were severely altered. The treatment of chronically infected mice 3 months postinfection showed that a 30-day treatment with 2 mg of ddI/ml induced a significant reduction in the number of T. gondii cysts in the cerebral tissue. These cysts were not viable, as confirmed by immunofluorescence and reinfection experiments. These experiments suggest a possible role for ddI in the treatment

22044. Mechanisms of Giardia lamblia differentiation into cysts. (PubMed)

Mechanisms of Giardia lamblia differentiation into cysts. Microbiologists have long been intrigued by the ability of parasitic organisms to adapt to changes in the environment. Since most parasites occupy several niches during their journey between vectors and hosts, they have developed adaptive responses which allow them to survive under adverse conditions. Therefore, the life cycles of protozoan and helminthic parasites are excellent models with which to study numerous mechanisms involved (...) in cell differentiation, such as the regulation of gene expression, signal transduction pathways, and organelle biogenesis. Unfortunately, many of these studies are very difficult because the conditions needed to elicit developmental changes in parasites remain undetermined in most cases. Recently, several interesting findings were reported on the process of differentiation of Giardia lamblia trophozoites into cysts. G. lamblia is a flagellated protozoan that inhabits the upper small intestine of its

22045. Chronic obstructive pancreatitis due to a pancreatic cyst in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (PubMed)

Chronic obstructive pancreatitis due to a pancreatic cyst in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, the most frequent inherited polycystic disease, is a systemic disorder characterised by the development of numerous and bilateral kidney cysts leading to chronic renal failure. Extrarenal cysts are located mainly in the liver but also in various organs including the pancreas. To our knowledge, complications of pancreatic cysts (...) in this disease have never been reported. The first case of painful chronic obstructive pancreatitis due to a true pancreatic cyst in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is reported. Abdominal transparietal and endoscopic ultrasonography, computed tomography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed a cystic lesion in the body of the pancreas associated with upstream dilatation of the main pancreatic duct. Intraoperative ultrasonography before and after cyst fluid

22046. Intrapericardial foregut cyst associated with intrauterine death. (PubMed)

Intrapericardial foregut cyst associated with intrauterine death. Intrapericardial developmental foregut cysts are rare and are most frequently incidental findings at necropsy in adults. A 29 year old Asian woman delivered a 24 week stillborn fetus seven days after diagnosis of intrauterine death caused by rupture of a foregut cyst. Multiple cysts occupied the wall of the right atrium and its rupture caused haemopericardium and cardiac tamponade.

22047. Surgical treatment of hydatid cysts of the heart: a report of 3 cases and a review of the literature (PubMed)

Surgical treatment of hydatid cysts of the heart: a report of 3 cases and a review of the literature Because the clinical signs and symptoms of cardiac hydatid cyst are nonspecific and highly variable, this disease may be difficult to diagnose. In this report, the cases of 3 patients with cardiac hydatid cysts located in the subepicardium are presented. In 2 of the patients the diagnosis was erroneous, and they were operated on for pulmonary hydatid cyst and acute abdomen in provincial (...) hospitals before transfer to our institution. One patient who had an intrapericardially ruptured cardiac hydatid cyst presented with the clinical features of an acute abdomen. A patient with 4 subepicardial cysts had undergone surgery for a cardiac hydatid cyst 10 years before presenting at our hospital. The perforated cyst in this patient was excised while the heart was beating; the 2 other patients were operated on with extracorporeal circulation. The epidemiologic and pathologic features, clinical

22048. Paranasal sinus cyst as a cause of stridor in a standardbred colt. (PubMed)

Paranasal sinus cyst as a cause of stridor in a standardbred colt. Sinus cysts are epithelium-lined, fluid-filled cavities that can occur in the paranasal sinuses of horses. Extensive damage to the permanent tooth buds was a significant feature in this case. The sequellae of these abnormalities, although not apparent at the time of presentation, remain an important consideration for prognosis.

Dominantly inherited cerebral dysplasia: arachnoid cyst associated with mild mental handicap in a mother and her son. We report a mother and son who each presented in infancy with hypotonia and global developmental delay. Subsequently, in both subjects, mild mental handicap was diagnosed in association with temporal lobe arachnoid cysts. Mendelian inheritance of this phenotype seems likely and macroscopic cerebral dysplasia in general may be underdiagnosed in people with familial, mild mental

Bile duct cysts in adults: a multi-institutional retrospective study. French Associations for Surgical Research. To review the features of adult patients undergoing surgery for bile duct cysts, focusing on the anatomy of the biliary tree as well as the long-term outcome.Bile duct cysts (BDCs) are uncommon in Western countries, and the majority of reported cases originate from Asia. Japanese authors have emphasized the frequent association of extra- and intrahepatic bile duct dilatations (...) , but grading of patients based on Todani's classification is often hindered by the absence of an accurate definition of types IC and IVA cysts. Moreover, despite the increasing use of extrahepatic cyst excision, little is known about the long-term outcome in patients with intrahepatic bile duct involvement.Forty-two adult patients with BDC were treated between 1980 and 1992 in 17 institutions of the French Associations for Surgical Research. Clinical presentation, radiologic presurgical evaluation

22052. Thoracic duct cyst in supraclavicular region. (PubMed)

Thoracic duct cyst in supraclavicular region. A 28-year-old female attended an outpatient clinic in October, 1989, because of a tumor in the left supraclavicular fossa, detected in a health examination. Following exploratory puncture of the tumor which yielded milky-white fluid, suggesting a cyst in the thoracic duct, she was admitted to our department. The cyst was unilocular measuring about 6 cm in diameter, and the fluid content was chyle-rich in lipids. Lymphography demonstrated a lymphatic (...) structure adjacent to the lesion and scattered lymph vessels on the cyst surface. On November 16 the cyst was resected. A restiform structure was observed between the cyst and the thoracic duct, but the presence or absence of communication was unclear. The histological diagnosis was thoracic duct cyst. Thoracic duct cyst occurring in the cervical region is very rare. Our case may provide useful information as to its pathogenesis and the mode of retention of cyst fluid.

22056. Choroid plexus cysts and aneuploidy. (PubMed)

Choroid plexus cysts and aneuploidy. The association of choroid plexus cysts with fetal aneuploidy, particularly trisomy 18, was first noted in 1986. Through the years there have been numerous reports on this subject, but no consensus has been reached with regard to chromosomal risk. In this review, we attempt to summarise published reports on second trimester choroid plexus cysts, with an emphasis on the strengths and weaknesses of each report. Based on these reports, additional malformations (...) are a significant risk factor for aneuploidy and an indication for determination of fetal karyotype. The management of isolated choroid plexus cysts remains controversial.

Duplication cyst of the antrum: a case report Gastrointestinal duplication is a rare congenital anomaly. Although it usually presents within the first few years of life, it may appear much later as described in this report of a 19-year-old man who had symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction. He was found to have a noncommunicating antral duplication cyst. The cyst was managed by antrectomy with excision of the cyst and several centimetres of duodenum. Microscopically the duplication cyst (...) contained a mucosa, submucosa and muscularis. There was no evidence of ulceration or malignant cells. His recovery was smooth. The etiology, presentation and management of antral duplication cysts causing gastric outlet obstruction are discussed.
