21981. Cereal Cyst Nematode (Heterodera avenae) on Oats. II. Early Root Development and Nematode Tolerance Full Text available with Trip Pro

Cereal Cyst Nematode (Heterodera avenae) on Oats. II. Early Root Development and Nematode Tolerance The effect of Heterodera avenae infestation on early seminal and lateral root growth was examined in four oat genotypes differing in tolerance to H. avenae. Recently emerged seminal roots were inoculated with a range of H. avenae larval densities, then transferred a hydroponic system to remove the effect of later nematode penetration on root development. Intolerance to H. avenae was assessed

21983. Inverse relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 early gene expression and cell differentiation in nude mouse epithelial cysts and tumors induced by HPV-positive human cell lines. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Inverse relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 early gene expression and cell differentiation in nude mouse epithelial cysts and tumors induced by HPV-positive human cell lines. Two human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV 16)-immortalized human keratinocyte cell lines (HPK) were shown to have retained the ability for differentiation after subcutaneous injection into nude mice. These properties were maintained even at late passage. HPK cells gave rise to transiently growing cysts (...) which exhibited an epitheliumlike architecture. Moreover, differentiation-specific markers such as cytokeratin 10, involucrin, and filaggrin were shown to be expressed in an ordered succession. RNA-RNA in situ hybridization revealed heterogeneous and low levels of HPV 16 E6-E7 RNA in the basal layer of the cysts. In contrast, in progressively growing tumors induced by HPK cells containing an activated ras oncogene (EJ-ras) or in tumors induced by the cervical carcinoma cell line CaSki, high levels

21984. An electron microscope and immunohistochemical study of the intracellular location of Toxoplasma tissue cysts within the brains of mice with congenital toxoplasmosis. Full Text available with Trip Pro

An electron microscope and immunohistochemical study of the intracellular location of Toxoplasma tissue cysts within the brains of mice with congenital toxoplasmosis. The wall of intact Toxoplasma tissue cysts within the brains of mice with congenital toxoplasmosis was investigated. Smaller cysts were identified within the soma of neurones. With larger cysts, the contained cystozoites were shown by ultrastructural examination to be surrounded by a layer of microtubules; immunohistochemical (...) staining revealed that this layer contained neurofilament protein. Interior to this layer was a much convoluted parasitophorus vacuole membrane; exterior was the host cell membrane. In most cases, synaptic plates were noted on the outer plasma membrane. In no instance were tissue cysts observed either within neuroglial cells or in the absence of host cells. These observations are discussed in relation to the pathogenesis of congenital toxoplasmosis in the brain.

Suppression of Cyst Nematode by Natural Infestation of a Nematophagous Fungus Penetration of cabbage roots by Heterodera schachtii was suppressed 50-77% in loamy sand naturally infested with the nematophagous fungus Hirsutella rhossiliensis. When Heterodera schachtii was incubated in the suppressive soil without plants for 2 days, 40-63% of the juveniles had Hirsutella rhossiliensis spores adhering to their cuticles. Of those with spores, 82-92% were infected. Infected nematodes were killed

Distribution of Soybean Cyst Nematode in Nebraska A survey of 552 soybean fields in 20 counties in Nebraska in 1986-88 revealed 35 fields infested with the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines. Identification was confirmed with a greenhouse bioassay, using 'Lee 74' soybean, and by the application of a DNA hybridization probe derived from SCN mitochondrial DNA. Most of the SCN-infested fields were located on the Missouri River floodplain and in the southeastern corner of the state.

21989. Expression of cytokeratin in the epithelium of dentigerous cysts and odontogenic keratocysts: an aid to diagnosis. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Expression of cytokeratin in the epithelium of dentigerous cysts and odontogenic keratocysts: an aid to diagnosis. Sections of tissue embedded in paraffin wax from 18 selected odontogenic cysts were studied both histologically and immunohistochemically with antibodies to cytokeratins using the indirect peroxidase technique. The cysts were divided on a clinical and histological basis into two equal groups comprising dentigerous cysts and odontogenic keratocysts. It was possible to differentiate (...) the two cyst types in every case by the pattern of staining using the monoclonal antibody LP34 for cytokeratins of intermediate molecular weight. The monoclonal antibody CAM 5.2 for cytokeratins of low molecular weight was not discriminatory. Such a clear distinction may prove useful diagnostically in distinguishing between two cysts of similar appearance but very different behaviour.

21991. Percutaneous aspiration and alcohol sclerotherapy for symptomatic hepatic cysts. An alternative to surgical intervention. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Percutaneous aspiration and alcohol sclerotherapy for symptomatic hepatic cysts. An alternative to surgical intervention. Eight patients with 15 symptomatic nonneoplastic congenital hepatic cysts underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous aspiration and temporary injection of 99% ethanol into the cyst. All cysts were treated at least twice at the same sitting. The volume of alcohol injected varied from 20 to 100 ml, depending on the size of the cyst. A cure was usually achieved with one alcohol (...) sclerotherapy treatment. Only minor side effects such as transient pain and temperature elevation occurred. No recurrences were found during a follow-up period of 12 to 32 months. The results indicate that aspiration and alcohol sclerotherapy is a feasible alternative to surgical intervention in patients with symptomatic nonneoplastic congenital hepatic cysts. We recommend it as the treatment of choice in cases with high surgical risk or polycystic liver disease.

Cathepsin D and epidermal growth factor in human breast cyst fluid. Cathespin D (Cath D) is a proteolytic enzyme secreted by human breast cancer cells with a growth promoting activity in vitro. In the present study, we measured Cath D and Epidermal Growth Factor/alpha Transforming Growth Factor (EGF/alpha-TGF) concentrations in the breast cyst fluid (BCF) of 43 patients with gross cystic disease of the breast. Both Cath D (median 2.45 pmoles mg-1 protein; range 0-4.84 vs 0.98 pmoles mg-1 (...) protein; range 0-3.11) and EGF/alpha-TGF (28.71 ng mg-1 protein; range 7.05-50.63 vs 10.83 ng mg-1 protein; range 0.06-30.55) levels were higher in BCF of apocrine than flattened cysts (P less than 0.0005 and P less than 0.01, respectively). Premenopausal patients showed higher concentrations of Cath D (P less than 0.05) and EGF/alpha-TGF (P less than 0.05) than postmenopausal patients. A positive correlation was obtained between intracystic concentrations of Cath D and EGF/alpha-TGF (P less than

21998. Branchial cysts: congenital or acquired? Full Text available with Trip Pro

Branchial cysts: congenital or acquired? Branchial cysts are one of the commonest causes of neck lumps in the young adult. Their aetiology is the subject of some controversy, although available evidence suggests that they are derived from lymphoid tissue. We present two cases of branchial cysts, and emphasise the importance of excluding more sinister causes of neck lumps before excision, even when the clinical features suggest benign pathology.
