281. Longitudinal study of body mass index, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension in 60,000 men and women in Sweden and Austria. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Longitudinal study of body mass index, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension in 60,000 men and women in Sweden and Austria. Obesity is suggested to underlie development of other metabolic aberrations, but longitudinal relationships between metabolic factors at various ages has not been studied in detail.Data from 27,379 men and 32,275 women with in total 122,940 health examinations in the Västerbotten Intervention Project, Sweden and the Vorarlberg Health Monitoring and Prevention (...) Programme, Austria were used to investigate body mass index (BMI), mid-blood pressure, and fasting levels of glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol at baseline in relation to 10-year changes of these factors and weight. We included paired examinations performed 10±2 years apart and used them for longitudinal analysis with linear regression of changes between the ages 30 and 40, 40 and 50, or 50 and 60 years.Higher levels of BMI were associated with increases in glucose and mid-blood pressure

282. The importance of waist circumference and body mass index in cross-sectional relationships with risk of cardiovascular disease in Vietnam. Full Text available with Trip Pro

The importance of waist circumference and body mass index in cross-sectional relationships with risk of cardiovascular disease in Vietnam. Waist circumference (WC) is an indicator of intra-abdominal adipose tissue, high levels of which confer an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease. Population data on WC should be more informative than data on body mass index (BMI), which is a general indicator of body size. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of WC relative to BMI in cross (...) of Vietnam. All measurements were performed in accordance with the STEPS protocols. All analyses were performed using complex survey methods. The measurements of WC and BMI were highly correlated (men r = 0.80, women r = 0.77). For men, the strongest and predominant associations with BP, glucose, and TC were for WC or an index based on WC. For women, this was true for glucose but BMI was more important for BP and TC. WC or an index based on WC provided better discrimination than BMI of hypertension

Factors associated with body mass index in children and adolescents: An international cross-sectional study. The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in childhood has implications for their future health. There are many potential contributors to overweight and obesity in childhood. The aim was to investigate the association between postulated risk factors and body mass index (BMI) in children and adolescents.Secondary analysis of data from a multi-centre, multi-country, cross

Body mass index ≥23 is a risk factor for insulin resistance and diabetes in Japanese people: A brief report. Screening for undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus is recommended for Asian Americans with a body mass index ≥23. However, the optimal body mass index cut-off score for predicting the risk of diabetes mellitus in Japanese people is not well known. The aim of this study was to determine the best body mass index cut-off score for predicting insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus (...) cut-off scores for prediction of insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus were determined. In the clamp study, the optimal body mass index cut-off score to predict insulin resistance in non-diabetic patients was 22.7. All participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus were insulin resistant, and the optimal body mass index cut-off score for prediction of severe insulin resistance was 26.2. When the data from the type 2 diabetic and the non-diabetic participants were combined, the optimal body mass

285. Survival in patients on hemodialysis: Effect of gender according to body mass index and creatinine. Full Text available with Trip Pro

Survival in patients on hemodialysis: Effect of gender according to body mass index and creatinine. The association of a higher body mass index (BMI) with better survival is a well-known "obesity paradox" in patients on hemodialysis (HD). However, men and women have different body compositions, which could impact the effect of BMI on mortality. We investigated the effect of gender on the obesity-mortality relationship in Korean patients on HD.This study included 2,833 maintenance patients on HD (...) with better survival only in male patients on HD.BMI could be used as a risk factor for mortality in male patients on HD. However, the mortality of female patients on HD was not related with baseline and follow-up BMI. This suggests that BMI is a good surrogate marker of lean body composition, especially in male patients on HD.

Executive function impairments in fibromyalgia syndrome: Relevance of clinical variables and body mass index. Several investigations suggest the presence of deterioration of executive function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The study quantified executive functions in patients with FMS. A wide array of functions was assessed, including updating, shifting and inhibition, as well as decision making and mental planning. Moreover, clinical variables were investigated as possible mediators (...) of executive dysfunction, including pain severity, psychiatric comorbidity, medication and body mass index (BMI).Fifty-two FMS patients and 32 healthy controls completed a battery of 14 neuropsychological tests. A Cross-sectional Prospective Study of Asymptomatic Urinary Abnormalities, Blood Pressure, and Body Mass Index in Healthy School Children Screening school children for urinary abnormalities is an inexpensive task but is not commonly undertaken in India. Although debated in western countries, its utility in early diagnosis of kidney disorders has been proved by studies from Asia. We examined the prevalence of asymptomatic urinary abnormalities (AUA), obesity, and hypertension in school children (...) screened. Of these, data from 9306 children were available for AUA, obesity, and hypertension. The prevalence rate was 7.44% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 6.91%-7.97%) for at least 1 AUA. Isolated hematuria was present in 5.2% (95% CI 4.75%-5.65%), whereas isolated proteinuria was present in 1.9% (95% CI = 1.62%-2.18%). The prevalence of prehypertension was 13.43% (95% CI = 12.74%-14.12%) and that of hypertension and abnormal body mass index was 4.05% (95% CI = 6.43%-7.47%) and 38.67 (95% CI = 37.68

Association of current and former smoking with body mass index: A study of smoking discordant twin pairs from 21 twin cohorts. Smokers tend to weigh less than never smokers, while successful quitting leads to an increase in body weight. Because smokers and non-smokers may differ in genetic and environmental family background, we analysed data from twin pairs in which the co-twins differed by their smoking behaviour to evaluate if the association between smoking and body mass index (BMI) remains

Pearson's correlation coefficient (R) between the original NS and IT was 0.297, whereas the R was improved to 0.388 when the modified NS was employed. If the modified NS was low complexity, 95.2% achieved IT <30 minutes. Of them, none showed IT ≥30 minutes if the body mass index was <25 kg/m2.The modified NS had a better correlation to the IT than the original NS
