6. Accuracy of dermoscopy in distinguishing erythroplasia of Queyrat from common forms of chronic balanitis: results from a multicentric observational study. (PubMed)

Accuracy of dermoscopy in distinguishing erythroplasia of Queyrat from common forms of chronic balanitis: results from a multicentric observational study. Clinical differentiation of erythroplasia of Queyrat (EQ) and chronic forms of balanitis may be challenging, especially in early phases or in overlapping cases. Dermoscopy has been shown to be a useful supportive tool in facilitating the distinction between tumoral and inflammatory skin conditions; yet, data on EQ and balanitis are scarce (...) or sparse. To systematically assess the dermoscopic features of both EQ and common forms of chronic balanitis and to investigate the accuracy of dermoscopy in distinguishing these conditions.Subjects with EQ or chronic balanitis confirmed histologically or microbiologically (for infectious forms) were recruited. A representative dermoscopic image of a target lesion was retrospectively assessed for the presence of specific morphological findings. A correlation matrix was created using Spearman's rho

11. Balanitis xerotica obliterans: has its diagnostic accuracy improved with time? (PubMed)

Balanitis xerotica obliterans: has its diagnostic accuracy improved with time? We observed whether general practitioners are referring more appropriately for balanitis xerotica obliterans in regards to circumcision, especially at a time of clinical concern, and whether their discriminative abilities were affected by age. We also aimed to explore if balanitis xerotica obliterans was over-diagnosed by surgeons potentially leading to unnecessary circumcisions of healthy foreskins.Cross-sectional (...) descriptive study.Leicester Royal Infirmary. All children less than 16 years of age were included and were subsequently split into two categories: those less than or equal to five years and those above five years. Circumcision was justified if surgeon found pathology under foreskin commissioning guidelines set by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. After clinical diagnosis of balanitis xerotica obliterans, the pathological database was searched for histological confirmation.Has diagnostic accuracy

17. The clinical spectrum of syphilitic balanitis of Follmann: report of five cases and a review of the literature. (PubMed)

The clinical spectrum of syphilitic balanitis of Follmann: report of five cases and a review of the literature. Eugène Follmann first described syphilitic balanitis as a manifestation of primary syphilis in 1948 and since then it has been known as syphilitic balanitis of Follmann (SBF). So far, SBF has rarely been described in literature. We are reporting five additional cases of SBF considering the broad differential diagnosis of balanitis.A review of the available literature of SBF (...) was performed and five additional cases analyzed. In our case series, the clinical appearance of SBF shows a heterogeneous spectrum varying from painful oedematous balanoposthitis with beginning paraphimosis to superficial erosive balanitis and even to painless induration of the glans.SBF might be seen more frequently than has been described due to misinterpretation. Therefore primary syphilis should be included in the differential diagnosis of balanitis and balanoposthitis.© 2016 European Academy

19. Balanitis

Balanitis Balanitis - NICE CKS Clinical Knowledge Summaries Share Balanitis: Summary Balanitis describes inflammation of the glans penis, and posthitis describes inflammation of the prepuce (foreskin). In practice, both areas are often affected, and the term 'balanoposthitis' is then used. Balanitis may be caused by a range of different conditions affecting the penile skin (which may present similarly and may co-exist) including: Non-specific dermatitis with possible candidal or bacterial (...) secondary infection, or trauma. Other infections including anaerobes and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Skin conditions such as contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, or lichen sclerosus. Pre-malignant penile conditions. Balanitis affects about 4% of uncircumcised boys between the ages of 2–5 years. Complications may include phimosis, meatal stenosis, urethral stricture, sexual dysfunction, and penile squamous cell carcinoma, depending on the underlying cause
