How to Trip Rapid Review

Step 1: Select articles relevant to your search (remember the system is only optimised for single intervention studies)

Step 2: press

Step 3: review the result, and maybe amend the or if you know better! If we're unsure of the overall sentiment of the trial we will display the conclusion under the article title. We then require you to tell us what the correct sentiment is.

Herpes simplex virus 2 infection increases HIV acquisition in men and women: systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies. To estimate the sex-specific effect of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) on the acquisition of HIV infection. The increased number of longitudinal studies available since the last meta-analysis was published allows for the calculation of age- and sexual behaviour-adjusted relative risks (RR) separately for men and women.Systematic review and meta-analysis

189622. Treating water with chlorine at point-of-use to improve water quality and reduce child diarrhea in developing countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis. (PubMed)

Treating water with chlorine at point-of-use to improve water quality and reduce child diarrhea in developing countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis. We conducted a systematic review of all studies that measured diarrheal health impacts in children and the impact on water quality of point-of-use chlorine drinking water treatment. Twenty-one relevant studies were identified from > 856 screened abstracts. Data were extracted and combined using meta-analysis to provide summary estimates

189623. Rapid point-of-care HIV testing in pregnant women: a systematic review and meta-analysis. (Full text)

Rapid point-of-care HIV testing in pregnant women: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Rapid, point-of-care human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing has the potential to enhance strategies to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV infection. Rapid tests need minimal laboratory infrastructure and can be performed by health workers with minimal training. In our systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to summarize the overall diagnostic accuracy of rapid HIV tests

Array-based comparative genomic hybridization for investigating chromosomal abnormalities in patients with learning disability: systematic review meta-analysis of diagnostic and false-positive yields. Array-based comparative genomic hybridization is increasingly being used in patients with learning disability, in addition to existing cytogenetic techniques. This paper reports the results of an evaluation of this emerging technology and discusses the challenges faced in conducting (...) the evaluation.Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating patients with learning disability and dysmorphic features in whom conventional cytogenetic analysis has proven negative. Conventional indices of clinical validity could not be calculated, and we use an alternative, based on the extent to which array-based comparative genomic hybridization met its clinical objectives.Seven studies (462 patients) were included. The overall diagnostic yield of causal abnormalities was 13% (95% confidence interval

189628. Diagnostic accuracy of EUS for vascular invasion in pancreatic and periampullary cancers: a meta-analysis and systematic review. (PubMed)

Diagnostic accuracy of EUS for vascular invasion in pancreatic and periampullary cancers: a meta-analysis and systematic review. Vascular invasion (VI) in a patient with pancreatic or periampullary cancers precludes surgery and indicates a poor prognosis. Published data on the accuracy of EUS in diagnosing VI is varied. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the accuracy of EUS in diagnosing VI in patients with pancreatic and periampullary cancers.Data from EUS studies were pooled (...) by EUS was 9.1 (95% CI, 4.6-17.9) and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.3 (95% CI, 0.2-0.5). Diagnostic odds ratio, the odds of having VI in positive as compared with negative EUS studies, was 40.1 (95% CI, 16.1-99.9). The P value for chi(2) heterogeneity for all the pooled estimates was >.05.Although EUS is the best noninvasive test to diagnose VI in pancreatic and periampullary cancers, this meta-analysis showed that the specificity (90%) is high but the sensitivity (73%) is not as high

Systematic review and meta-analysis of cyclodiene insecticides and breast cancer. Cyclodienes are a group of organochlorine pesticides that have been the focus of increasing numbers of breast cancer etiology studies in recent years. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize and pool the results of breast cancer and cyclodiene insecticide contamination studies. We used databases from 1966 to 7/2006 and included 21 case-control studies. Pooled odds ratios or differences (...) in means as geometric means ratios were calculated. Meta-analysis of the chemicals did not reveal any statistically significant association except for heptachlor. The heterogeneity among the different studies and the methodology limitations are discussed.

189636. Understanding systematic reviews and meta-analysis. (Full text)

Understanding systematic reviews and meta-analysis. This review covers the basic principles of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The problems associated with traditional narrative reviews are discussed, as is the role of systematic reviews in limiting bias associated with the assembly, critical appraisal, and synthesis of studies addressing specific clinical questions. Important issues that need to be considered when appraising a systematic review or meta-analysis are outlined, and some (...) of the terms used in the reporting of systematic reviews and meta-analyses--such as odds ratio, relative risk, confidence interval, and the forest plot--are introduced.

189637. A commercial line probe assay for the rapid detection of rifampicin resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis. (Full text)

A commercial line probe assay for the rapid detection of rifampicin resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a leading cause of death worldwide. In multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) infectiousness is frequently prolonged, jeopardizing efforts to control TB. The conventional tuberculosis drug susceptibility tests are sensitive and specific, but they are not rapid. The INNO-LiPA Rif. TB (LiPA) is a commercial line (...) probe assay designed to rapidly detect rifampicin resistance, a marker of MDR-TB. Although LiPA has shown promising results, its overall accuracy has not been systematically evaluated. We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the accuracy of LiPA for the detection of rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis among culture isolates and clinical specimens. We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, BIOSIS, and Google Scholar, and contacted authors, experts and the manufacturer. Fifteen

A meta-analysis with results from the 2 articles that used the segmental technique was completed. The combined mean estimates of intrusion and 95% CI were 1.46 mm (1.05-1.86 mm) for the maxillary incisors and 1.90 mm (1.22-2.57 mm) for the mandibular incisors.True incisor intrusion is achievable
