Lack of association between the Serotonin Transporter Promoter Polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and Panic Disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis. The aim of this study is to assess the association between the Serotonin Transporter Promoter Polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and Panic Disorder (PD).This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies with unrelated individuals of any ethnic origin examining the role of the 5-HTTLPR in PD according to standard diagnostic criteria (DSM (...) intervals.Nineteen potential articles were identified, and 10 studies were included in this meta-analysis. No statistically significant association between 5-HTTLPR and PD was found, OR = 0.91 (CI95% 0.80 to 1.03, p = 0.14). Three sub-analyses divided by ethnicity, control group quality and Agoraphobia comorbidity also failed to find any significant association. No evidence of heterogeneity was found between studies in the analyses. Results from this systematic review do not provide evidence to support

189542. Volume of tobacco advertising in African American markets: systematic review and meta-analysis. (PubMed)

Volume of tobacco advertising in African American markets: systematic review and meta-analysis. African Americans currently bear the greatest burden of morbidity and mortality due to smoking, and exposure to pro-tobacco media messages predicts smoking. This study compared the concentration (proportion of media messages that are for tobacco) and density (pro-tobacco media messages per person) of pro-tobacco media messages between African American and Caucasian markets. We searched Medline (1966 (...) eligibility criteria, including seven comparing billboard/signage in African American and Caucasian markets and four comparing magazine advertising in African American and Caucasian markets. Meta-analysis estimated a pooled odds ratio of 1.7 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.1, 2.6) for a given billboard being smoking-related in African American vs. Caucasian market areas (i.e., concentration). The pooled rate ratio of the density of smoking-related billboards was 2.6 (95% CI 1.5, 4.7) in African American

189543. The prehospital 12-lead electrocardiogram's effect on time to initiation of reperfusion therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature. (PubMed)

The prehospital 12-lead electrocardiogram's effect on time to initiation of reperfusion therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature. The prehospital electrocardiogram (ECG) is becoming the standard of care of suspected cardiac chest pain. We evaluated the evidence regarding the prehospital ECG and sought to quantify the reduction in time to reperfusion therapy attributable to the prehospital ECG. We conducted a systematic review and analyzed studies that were conducted (...) in emergency medical systems relevant to providers in the United States. The papers were limited to studies that reported original data that compared prehospital ECG to no prehospital ECG groups. Four studies containing 99 patients met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis of these studies revealed a difference of 24.7 (95% confidence interval, 16.7-32.7) minutes. Providers now have a quantified value of the prehospital ECG based on the best published evidence. In addition, this search showed

189545. Use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) isoforms for the detection of prostate cancer in men with a PSA level of 2-10 ng/ml: systematic review and meta-analysis. (PubMed)

Use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) isoforms for the detection of prostate cancer in men with a PSA level of 2-10 ng/ml: systematic review and meta-analysis. Measurement of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for the detection of prostate cancer has poor specificity in men with PSA levels between 2 and 10 ng/ml. It has been suggested that measurement of the ratio of free to total PSA (f/tPSA) or complexed PSA (cPSA) might offer an improvement. We performed a systematic review and meta (...) -analysis to evaluate the diagnostic performance of these tests among men with PSA levels between 2 and 10 ng/ml.Data on sensitivity and specificity were extracted from 66 eligible studies. Likelihood ratios and summary receiver operating characteristic curves were estimated and possible sources of heterogeneity between studies examined.Use of the f/tPSA or the cPSA test improved diagnostic performance among men with a total PSA (tPSA) of 2-4 or 4-10 ng/ml compared to tPSA alone. The diagnostic

Relationship between reduced forced expiratory volume in one second and the risk of lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Individuals with severely impaired lung function have an increased risk of lung cancer. Whether milder reductions in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1)) also increase the risk of lung cancer is controversial. Moreover, there is little consensus on whether men and women have similar risks for lung cancer for similar decreases in FEV(1).A search

189551. Relation of C-reactive protein to stroke, cognitive disorders, and depression in the general population: systematic review and meta-analysis. (PubMed)

Relation of C-reactive protein to stroke, cognitive disorders, and depression in the general population: systematic review and meta-analysis. Evidence suggests that a high concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP) is a cardiovascular risk factor and an important correlate of cognitive disorders and depression. Recently, population-based studies examining the association between CRP and stroke, cognitive impairment, or depression have been done but have not yet been systematically reviewed. Here (...) we present a systematic review of the associations between CRP and stroke, cognitive impairment, and depression. Hospital or clinic-based studies were excluded because the inferences might not be easily applicable to the general population. 19 eligible studies of CRP were selected: seven for stroke, six for cognitive disorders, and six for depression. Raised CRP concentrations were associated with history of stroke and increased risk of incident stroke. Meta-analysis of studies with long follow

189555. Has Cox-2 a prognostic role in non-small-cell lung cancer? A systematic review of the literature with meta-analysis of the survival results. (PubMed)

Has Cox-2 a prognostic role in non-small-cell lung cancer? A systematic review of the literature with meta-analysis of the survival results. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is overexpressed in lung cancer, especially in adenocarcinoma (ADC). Our aim was to determine the prognostic value of COX-2 on survival in patients with lung cancer. Studies evaluating the survival impact of COX-2 in lung cancer, published until December 2005, were selected. Data for estimation of individual hazard ratios (HR (...) ) for survival were extracted from the publications and combined in a pooled HR. Among 14 eligible papers, all dealing with non-small-cell lung cancer, 10 provided results for meta-analysis of survival data (evaluable studies). Cyclooxygenase-2 positivity was associated with reduced survival, improved survival or no statistically significant impact in six, one and seven studies, respectively. Combined HR for the 10 evaluable studies (1236 patients) was 1.39 (95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.97-1.99

189556. Design-related bias in hospital fall risk screening tool predictive accuracy evaluations: systematic review and meta-analysis. (PubMed)

Design-related bias in hospital fall risk screening tool predictive accuracy evaluations: systematic review and meta-analysis. Fall risk screening tools are frequently used as a part of falls prevention programs in hospitals. Design-related bias in evaluations of tool predictive accuracy could lead to overoptimistic results, which would then contribute to program failure in practice.A systematic review was undertaken. Two blind reviewers assessed the methodology of relevant publications (...) into a four-point classification system adapted from multiple sources. The association between study design classification and reported results was examined using linear regression with clustering based on screening tool and robust variance estimates with point estimates of Youden Index (= sensitivity + specificity - 1) as the dependent variable. Meta-analysis was then performed pooling data from prospective studies.Thirty-five publications met inclusion criteria, containing 51 evaluations of fall risk
